Use stories to keep your audience entertained. Make sure the story is not fiction. And it's related to your topic. That story should have a structure: beginning, middle, and ending. Apply the story to your message. How does it relate to the Audience? What is the call to action? The best stories are authentic ones, preferably your personal experience.

Whatever you do, don't start with a joke. PLEASE! People take this cliche advice to mean that they should google "funny joke," pick one, start their presentation with that and continue. No. Effectively using humor means intentionally choosing humor that will not only get the audience to laugh or smile, but also serves a larger purpose. For example, you could start the discussion with a relevant story that has humor in it, but also that demonstrates a key challenge customers are having. Or you could use an association that connects the problem you're solving to something more accessible (like golf or going to the grocery store). Focus first on what you want the humor to accomplish, then brainstorm possibilities from there.

Humor in high-stakes situations is like a pressure release valve for the mind. Used wisely, it doesn't diminish gravity—it enhances understanding. A well-placed quip can transform tension into attention, making complex ideas stick and difficult truths palatable. The art lies in finding the sweet spot: where laughter meets insight, and levity amplifies impact. Master this, and you'll turn monologues into memorable moments.

Before meeting with someone, research them to learn a little about them. This will help to break the ice and create rapport. Do they like golf? Do they collect Pokemon cards? Maybe they are part of a CrossFit group (or box, in the CrossFit language)? Inject a bit of humour here and there where it fits in the context while also being respectful. I always say, "Punch up, not down." People can be challenging at times but if you can show a side where you'd like to connect, it goes a long way.

Injecting humor into a serious discussion requires a delicate balance. First, it's crucial to gauge the audience's mood and the context of the topic. Begin with light, relatable anecdotes that connect to the subject matter, ensuring they resonate with the stakeholders' experiences. This creates a bridge between the seriousness of the topic and a lighter tone. Use self-deprecating humor or gentle, situational jokes that highlight shared challenges, fostering camaraderie. Timing is key; introducing humor at natural pauses or transitions can break tension without undermining the gravity of the discussion. Always remain mindful of the diversity in your audience to avoid potential missteps. The goal is to create an atmosphere of engagement.
