Your workshop is being affected by a participant's negative attitude. How do you turn the energy around?
A negative participant can derail a workshop, but with the right approach, you can steer the energy back on track. To transform the dynamic:
- Engage directly with the individual, showing empathy and understanding to their concerns.
- Redirect focus by setting clear, positive goals for the group to achieve together.
- Introduce energizing activities to shift the mood and encourage constructive participation.

It’s important to recognise that "negative" is a subjective, value-laden term. What may appear as disruptive behaviour could stem from unresolved issues or unmet needs that the person brings to the workshop. Instead of viewing this attitude as a problem, see it as an opportunity to explore potential underlying concerns. During the break, engage the participant in a one-on-one conversation to understand their perspective. Use empathetic listening and open-ended questions like, “Can you tell me more about what’s on your mind?” This approach often reveals if the participant feels unheard or has constructive concerns. This can shift their attitude and, with it, the workshop’s energy, as they feel respected and included.

A key strategy I utilize is to listen and respond with empathy, ensuring I fully understand the participant’s perspective. This approach helps maintain their self-esteem throughout the facilitation process, which is essential for fostering a psychologically safe environment within the group. Additionally, I refer back to the group’s established ground rules, ‘agree to disagree.’ By reminding participants of this agreement when differences arise, I create space for respectful dialogue. Allowing a few minutes for focused discussion in these areas helps diffuse tension, reinforce a culture of open and respectful communication, preserves psychological safety and also encourages healthy conversation.

first, acknowledge their perspective without letting it derail the session. A simple validation like, "I understand that concern," can defuse tension. Next, try to re-engage them with questions or invite them to contribute positively by sharing solutions rather than just complaints. Shifting focus to collaborative problem-solving often changes the tone. If the negativity persists, redirect the group's energy with an interactive activity or a change in pace. Keeping the momentum positive and constructive helps prevent one person’s attitude from dominating the workshop.

One important thing to note would be to have the discussion in private rather than in the larger round. Praise in Public, Criticize in Private. It's important to understand if there's an underlying issue causing the behavior. Addressing it privately ensures a constructive dialogue, fostering a more positive and collaborative environment. This way, you're respecting the individual while also showing empathy and aiming to resolve the root cause.
