Only give the volunteers credit where credit is due! Random praise for no apparent reason demeans the workers and further exacerbates the situation. When physically possible, grab a shove or rake and drag some debris over to the pile of flotsam and jettison. Do not condescend, get dirty and be human! It doesn’t make you “pals” and that’s not your goal. You just want to be genuine and in control.
