Creating an environment that encourages open dialogue among trainees is crucial for effective learning and development. One effective strategy is to establish psychological safety, where individuals feel safe to express their thoughts without fear of judgment or repercussions. This can be achieved by actively soliciting feedback, demonstrating vulnerability as a leader, and responding positively to all contributions, regardless of their nature. Additionally, incorporating anonymous feedback tools can help trainees voice concerns or suggestions they may hesitate to share openly. Regularly reinforcing the value of diverse perspectives can further cultivate a culture of openness and collaboration.

To me, it is very challenging to handle passive trainees. In most cases, shying personality type is considered the main cause. So it is a culture-sensitive behavior. In addition, fear and mental barriers can be leading causes for feedback avoidance. I use the following tips: I start the session by a question that is far away from the topic in order to screen the introverted members. I avoid putting them "on spot" to reduce the level of stress and anxiety in the room through "no pressure" approach. I follow mixed approach to allow balanced participation, like one-to-one, chat apps, or survey. I put more efforts in making them feel valued and their feed back is appreciated. I use story-telling tools to enhance a natural and open dialogue.

To encourage reluctant trainees to share feedback: 1. Create a safe, judgment-free space. 2. Start with simple or anonymous feedback. 3. Ask open-ended questions. 4. Model giving feedback yourself. 5. Acknowledge all input positively. 6. Use small group discussions. These steps build trust and make trainees more comfortable sharing.
