If you notice a test takes multiple seconds to complete then it’s time to assess if it’s really needed. With that said, I don’t see this being part of a regular day to day life of an engineer. Do it as needed.

Test Driven Development is the best route to take when it comes to testing efficiency. It lets you solve the problem while authoring the tests and creates very fast feedback loops to keep you focused. Without TDD you’re just doing the work twice (manually testing a bunch and then codifying that manual testing later).
