Your team is tasked with reducing carbon footprints. How can you empower frontline staff to lead the charge?

It is remarkable that we often begin to act on our concerns about global warming without first asking how we measure we are doing to day by way of our GHG emissions. The first questions have to be (1) what are we emitting (2) who amongst us is emitting (3) who owns the emitted GHG (or are they using accounting tricks in their GHG calculations/ gaining their organisational boundaries with hacks on equity share / financial control/operational control decisions. Are they gaming their GHG responsibilities by using intensity ratio reporting or that other well used trick of market based emission factors use. These are seminal questions to firstly clarify. Then we can see who is responsible for what damage and force them into mitigation actions

Carbon Footprint is a confusing team and can mean different things to different employees. You need to meet employees where they are in the journey…don’t talk at them..listen first. What do they know about carbon footprint? What area of impact do they care about the most? How do they think they can best reduce it in their department / office? Through this approach you’ll: a) Ensure that the way you communicate about carbon footprint is pitched at the employee’s level of sustainability understanding. b) Flush out some great ideas c) Hopefully identify some advocates who you can engage to help you in your journey.

Frontline staffs need to know the effects of carbon footprint, related to future as they are the team who uses major equipment's in the industry they need to understand how minimally they can use the power resources, For example :- Replacing a i3 motor with i5 motor which results in less power consumption and results in carbon reduction.

Research and learn about tools that calculate carbon footprints and help set targets for neutralizing net emissions. Then present them to your group and encourage them to use them. Using accessible information such as electricity and gas consumption, waste production, transport use and even financial transactions, these resources aim to estimate the environmental impact of common habits. The result can make it easier to take practical steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase team members' environmental awareness.

Managers need to recognize or reward their employees' efforts for their deliveries, even though they know they are important for maintaining motivational and productive aspects. It is important for employees to know that their efforts and deliveries are evaluated and that they should receive rewards and payments that value their skills. For employees to feel independent and want to achieve results, it is important that they feel motivated. This will reflect directly on their actions.

It helps staff better understand the global impact and make more sustainable choices. Awareness helps companies choose products and services that do not pollute the environment and are in line with sustainable development.
