One should also consider translational technology.....moving a basic technical element from one application, iterating it, and introducing it in a new application. The initial roll out of teeth whitening strips was hindered by poor product stability (short shelf life) stemming from reactive hydrogen peroxide. Sequestering metal complexes were well known commercially to stabilize higher concentrations but not acceptable to a human oral care product. Researching the history of work to stabilize hydrogen peroxide found safe organic complexing systems. These were not the best for commercial high concentration (rail car transport) but formed the basis of a today's oral care product.

So do not be pessimistic or give up in case you are stuck in a rut - that is very common for the type of work you are undertaking.
