Transportation disruptions could be some of the biggest drains any team's productivity would see. Part of a team that suffered frequent delays and cancellations, I always tried to take proactive steps that kept morale high and productivity on course. First, I instituted an enabling work policy that would offer flexibility in times of schedule changes. Secondly, I availed them of timely updates on disruption events in transportation so that they could plan their commutes accordingly. Thirdly, I organized some virtual team-building activities in order to lift spirits and lighten the mood. By taking positive steps within our control to mitigate disruptions in transport, we were able to maintain a conducive work environment.

Make sure everyone knows what's happening and why. Regular check-ins can help alleviate stress and keep spirits high. Recognize and celebrate small victories to maintain morale. Encourage collaborative problem-solving so everyone feels involved and valued. Consider flexible work options to reduce burnout. And last but not least, a bit of humor and light-hearted moments can work wonders in keeping the team spirit alive!

Does your team REALLY need to start at 9am? could they start at 10? Alternatively could some start at 8 and finish earlier and other start at 10/11 and finish later? Would that be easier for people trying to beat the peak traffic and transport tariffs as well as creating a healthier work life balance? If those team members started at 11 they would be wanting to go for lunch around 2:30ish this would mean local eatery's are less busy and queues are less likely and they have longer on their down time instead of waiting in line for food, this in turn would make team members feel like they have had a sufficient break.

You take decisive action! Years ago, I worked for a company that had outsourced all its transport needs to a logistics provider. When they briefly failed to meet our customers' delivery expectations, our Managing Director responded swiftly. He went to a local Mercedes commercial dealer and arranged for the immediate purchase of 26 Sprinter vans. This decision not only lifted team morale but also showed our customers that we genuinely valued their business and were willing to take responsibility and correct mistakes.

To keep my team motivated amid transportation disruptions, I’d offer flexible solutions like remote work options or adjusted hours to reduce stress. I’d also explore carpool arrangements or temporary travel support. Regular check-ins would help gauge their well-being, while recognizing their adaptability reinforces engagement. By showing empathy and providing practical solutions, I’d keep morale high and ensure productivity remains steady.
