Your team is struggling with tech upskilling sessions. How can you support them effectively?

At a previous institution, I learned I was hired to address a long-term staff member's underperformance, with the expectation of termination. Instead, I identified a tech skill gap and placed them on a Performance Improvement Plan with guidance. Here’s my approach to tech upskilling: Assess Skills: Conduct a skills gap analysis. Learning should be participative in nature that makes the learning team take ownership of the learning process. Redesigning the learning outcomes to address individual needs. Furthermore case studies of similar situations enable the learner to develop their own examples which overall makes it easier to learn a new skill.

I do agree with it completely. One-to-one approach is the best method. Each individual is a unique creature. Nobody is perfect. Try to understand the uniqueness of each individual and try to find his / her strengths and weaknesses. Help for overcoming the weaknesses. And make the strengths more productive.

Rationally, this should be the first thing to do. Helping them effectively means supporting them with what they need and boosting productivity through practical solutions.

Explain why upscaling is important Give them choices to do them at their phase and at their own preferred mode (virtual, physical trainings, hybrid). Yet don’t forget to make them commit either timeline or goal wise

Encourage collaboration between IT and other departments to foster a deeper understanding of digital capabilities.Allocate dedicated time for team members to explore new technologies and develop innovative solutions.

Listen, first, address concerns and have experts & experienced technicians to guide efforts to ease the confusion and anxieties. When all are more sure of themselves, as well as supported fully, this situation will be solved.

The first step is acknowledge the difficulty: Let your team know that you recognize the challenge of the training and appreciate their willingness to learn after setting clear goals and outlining the specific skills and knowledge they'll gain by the end of the training. Break down the material and chunk complex topics into smaller, more manageable modules. Encourage collaboration by creating opportunities for team members to learn from each other through group discussions or peer mentoring by celebrating progress and recognize and celebrate individual and team milestones throughout the training process.
