A good practice is to have periodic feedback meetings with your team members, preferably one-to-one. In such meetings you can check with your team member if he/she feels that specific training(s) would help to do a better job. It is important to keep the team member comfortable to answer, otherwise he/she may think that an existing lack of knowledge would lead to a dismissal, while the goal is exactly the opposite. Moreover, analyze the outputs from your team members and compare to what was expected. If the output is significantly below the expectations, one of the reasons can be a knowledge that is not enough. In this case, you can suggest additional training(s).

Regularly conduct skill audit with the team by talking to them one on one, through assessment etc this will allow you to identify the skill gap. Once you have identified skill skill gaps provide targeted training and provide necessary support required. Conduct short and informal learning sessions where team share their learnings.

To address skill gaps in your IT team while maintaining service quality and timeliness, start by providing targeted training, certifications, and cross-training to upskill team members. Bring in external resources, such as contractors or managed service providers, to fill gaps temporarily and ensure expertise for critical tasks. Additionally, improve efficiency by implementing automation and IT service management tools to reduce repetitive work, allowing the team to focus on higher-priority projects. This combination of training, external support, and process optimization helps maintain service standards.
