In my experience, no more than two sentences for the problem statement (one is the ideal), will drive specificity in the problem statement. This is the start of the problem solving journey so get this as accurate as you can and you have a good foundation for the following steps.

I agree and when using PDCA or similar cycle, I’ve found that a great problem definition (what is wrong with what) coupled with facts around what is and is NOT drives the point of cause and subsequently the direct cause, on which the 5 Why methodology steps through to root cause.

One of the earliest experiences I had, on a problem solving training course, was that of brainstorming solutions and that “no idea is a bad idea”. I believe the introduction of the ski-jump on aircraft carriers came from such a session. An off the cuff comment during brainstorming to solve short take off issues, became the solution! As a leader, fostering inclusive behaviours and idea generation is the best way to get to great solutions.

I personally believe (based on my & my peers′ experience in this field) there are sufficient tools, processes, funnels, brainstorming methods etc available to innovation teams. Therefor the question remains: Where is the biggest leverage for improvement and performance of innovation teams! A POV from craigberoch.org: Reactivating innate human qualities! First one needs to check if their skill set is matching the given problem. Because I believe all are different and the ways of thinking and their interests would be different. Understanding this is important to guide them or coach them so that you ensure you are not expecting the solution from the person who doesn't have a skill set to solve the given problem. Understanding each employee working with you or under you would be important and it will make everyone's life easier.
