Start with identifying the triggers, either through 1-on-1 conversations or anonymous surveys. E.g. One team member is triggered by their colleague's behavior in meetings. They complain that the colleague tends to ramble and interrupt everyone on a regular basis, which leads to frustration. Another team member is overwhelmed by the noise and chatter in the office open space. They complain that they aren't able to focus due to constant distractions. Different triggers will require different solutions. Behavior in meetings can be moderated with clear guidance on how to effectively contribute to the discussion. Sensory overload can be managed with noise cancelling headphones or the possibility to reserve meetings rooms just for focus hours.

Start by encouraging team members to recognize and label their emotions. This helps reduce the intensity of their emotional responses. If necessary, let them journal their emotional responses to specifically identify common triggers to better manage them. Foster a supportive environment where everyone feels safe to express their feelings, and guide them in refocusing on the project goals.

Addressing emotional triggers in the workplace is crucial for maintaining productivity, especially in high-stress environments like media and technology. Leaders should foster an emotionally intelligent culture by encouraging open communication, providing training on emotional awareness, and implementing strategies for conflict resolution. By recognizing and validating emotions, teams can transform challenges into opportunities for growth, ultimately enhancing collaboration and innovation. In a rapidly evolving landscape, such as that shaped by artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, emotional resilience becomes a key driver of success.

Emotions are important data giving feedback towards attitude & approach towards their work. If people are emotionally triggered that’s affecting productivity at large. It usually means: a. People are struggling with recurring interpersonal relationships, b. Coping with unresolved, snowballing conflicts, c. That’s blocking productivity due to lack of trust, respect & feeling de-valued affecting work culture negatively. In such cases, Sr management needs the right skills & training on how to decode the root causes vs focusing on symptoms alone. Conduct survey, listening sessions and bring in an external organizational coach to help resolve. Leaders will need to lead by example. Keep communication channels open while the team recovers.
