To spark creativity in tight deadlines, I often facilitate rapid-fire brainstorming sessions using the SCAMPER technique (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse), which encourages the team to look at the problem from fresh angles. During a project, this technique helped our team overcome creative blocks & generate a dozen new ideas in just 30 minutes. Setting up a relaxed environment & encouraging everyone to share freely also helps ideas flow more naturally. A great approach (without time pressure) is to engage in "curiosity deep dives." Spend time learning about these topics and discuss any surprising insights as a group. Then, brainstorm how these unrelated concepts might apply to your current project. This method opens up new perspectives and often leads to unexpected, creative connections!

Start a quirky brainstorming session—think silly hat day or even a “bad ideas only” hour where the wackiest thoughts are celebrated like gold medals. Sometimes, a change of scenery helps too; even a stroll outside can turn those brain gears like a well-oiled machine! Let them sleep, take a shower, or go for a solitary walk. It‘ll actually be more conducive to innovative thinking than constant brainstorming. When there is time pressure, our natural instinct may be to push harder and force ideas. However, the opposite approach can often be more effective. Embrace relaxation. Our brains won't stop working - they'll continue searching for solutions in the background, free from the constraints of conscious effort. As a leader, it could be worthwhile to build in flexibility and understanding when employees are working on innovative projects. Extending deadlines or providing additional time for contemplation may ultimately result in higher quality, more original solutions.
