Burned out teams indicate the presence of one or more organizational stressors - but my research on workplace burnout places work overload as #7 on the Top 10 list. #3 is coworker negativity. Burnout reduces the quality of communication. Introduce regular check-ins to identify and respond to causes of employee stress. #2 is an employee's belief that their company doesn't care. Counteract this by providing tangible proof that you care and support your consultants. Don't assume you know what they need - ask them. #1 is poor leadership. If leaders are burned out, they can't provide the support and compassion to help others destress. Foster trust and respect employee autonomy through servant leadership - but walk the talk on self-care.

On our team, we actively manage burnout by holding regular meetings to review upcoming work and reprioritize tasks as needed. If the workload spikes, we pull in additional resources to help, ensuring no one is overwhelmed. Collaboration is key—we work together to share the load when a client has a heavy volume or a large project. We also rely on technology to streamline and organize tasks, keeping everything manageable. As a leader, being available to listen and offer support goes a long way. And we encourage taking real PTO—not just "PTO-ish"—to fully recharge and maintain balance.

Fostering open communication and collaboration among team members is essential in preventing burnout, but it goes deeper than that. Building a team around a core set of shared values—such as collaboration, integrity, and a zero-tolerance for office politics—sets the foundation for resilience during high-pressure periods. When these values are embedded, the team is united, committed to each other, and ready to face challenges together. In times of heavy workload, we don’t look for who’s at fault when something goes wrong; instead, we focus on identifying gaps and working collectively to close them. This culture of support and shared responsibility ensures that no one feels isolated, and it fosters a stronger, more engaged team.
