Your team members have varying preferred learning methods. How do you navigate conflicts that arise?

Assessing needs does not necessarily result in delivering what team members want or prefer. The need assessment should primarily lead what best training method to utilise to optimally convey training contents to the targeted audience. Training methods also depend on availability of tools and equipment at one's disposal. Using training methods without incorporating team members' voices may ultimately impact (adversely) turn out and interest in the training program. Hence, there should be room to accommodate their preferences and good communications to get buy-in from team members without losing our focus in selecting the best training methods based on assessments.

Every training or development initiative begins with a needs assessment step, to address gaps that exist. It helps to get an understanding of what the causes of conflict are.

Just like some people prefer reading instructions while others watch videos, every team member has different learning style.Take the time to identify each team member’s preferred learning style. Are they visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners?The answer to the HOW part is : 1. You can quickly ask your team how they prefer to learn?Encourage sharing , have team members share their learning preferences. 2.Observe and notice if team members engage more with certain types of content. 3. Ask for feedback after sessions to understand what’s effective.

One thing that i have tried and tested for team workshops/trainings is to include a bit of everything—short videos, interactive exercises, role plays, group discussions and reading material. This ensures everyone gets a chance to learn/interact in a way that suits them best.Also it's very engaging for the audience.

As there are varying personalities with different learning methods, it is key to include diversity in the planning stage of learning interventions.

Also, create a safe and honest environment by encouraging the group members to express their preferences and frustrations. This helps understand the root cause of conflicts and finding common ground.

Clear communication is key when planning training and design of learning methods. Learning methods used have varying benefits which when used produce different results, so this must be clearly communicated.

Imagine you're rolling out new software. Instead of just saying, “We’ve onboarded this software and we'll be replacing our current practices,” explain, “How to use it to make tasks easier and faster. What are it's unique features that help your teams stay on the same page and save time.”This way, your team understands the “WHY” and “HOW,” making them more open to embracing the change. A quick tip for effective communication is: clearly explain the "What" and "How", and always match your tone to the "Who" (your audience).

I always follow the approach by Stephen Covey’s philosophy in his book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". It says "seek first to understand, then to be understood."This means listening carefully to others before explaining your own point of view. By understanding different perspectives first, you’ll be able to find solutions that work for everyone and keep your training on track.If your team can't decide between online modules and in-person workshops, hear out their concerns. Explain the benefits of each and find a middle ground. For example, you could offer both options and let team members choose what works best for them.
