Your team members have diverse expertise in biotechnology. How do you ensure effective collaboration?

Biotech teams across business functions such as Research and Discovery, Clinical Trials, Commercial Operations and Manufacturing and Supply chain come with unique expertise. To bring right drug to market at right time it requires effective collaboration across teams. To achieve this collaboration clear definition of roles in the org structure is critical. Next, goals that incentivize each team to collaborate continuously will be important . Goals should not be divisive in nature and effective communication plan should be put in place to avoid any conflicts and create a streamlined process thinking. Also it will be important to enable cross functional training and enable diverse point of view. Keep continous feedback for conflict resolution.

I strongly recommend reading the "Medici Effect" to understand the power of diversity. Diversity is key to any innovation. Yet, it is important to identify the strengths and gaps of each individual and identify how they can work as a sports team focused on a common goal but contributing in different ways.

Consider conducting a mapping exercise of skills and previous experience ( Diseases worked on, drug modalitities worked on, regions/country experience, drug lifecycle experience), as well as areas each team member would like to work on. This can then be used to help assign tasks to the appropriate people, including stretching those who want to work in new areas, or when there are time constraints sending it to those who have the best ability.

Goals need to be clear. What is your Why is number one but then peal out the onion by narrowing down to a few objectives (OKRs) and make sure they are measurable. It's essential also to explain to each individual how their work contributes to the team OKRs.

Communication is key to success and can resolve many issues early on. Open communication must be encouraged as well as ensuring that all members have opportunities to contribute.

You need to communicate in all all-hands meeting as well as in 1on1 setting to make sure everyone is aware of the common goals and their individual contribution.

One of the key ways to ensure effective collaboration amongst diverse team members is to facilitate a conducive environment. One of the ways it could be facilitated is to have an open and psychologically safe space. This ensures that inhibitions amongst team members is dropped and they are willing to hear and build upon inputs from one another. This ensures a free flowing thoughts and ideas and an opportunity for the diverse team members to echo some similarities and a sense of belonging which would foster continuous and a sustainable culture of learning and innovation.

Conflicts are the result of misunderstanding and poor communication. The earlier you identify gaps in your information flow, the better you can resolve conflicts. Sometimes, conflicts arise when the common goal is not clear and people don't understand how their diversity and combination of skills is the only way to achieve the team's goals.

I find it helpful to focus on the objectivity of the issue and peal away the subjective conflict. This helps people remove their feelings from the issue and focus on the actual process or problem that is disputed. Building trust among teams is paramount to them working well together and the first step in that is honest communication about the facts.
