Your team member has made a mistake. How can you give feedback that will help them grow?

Preparing yourself is really important when going into a potential feedback situation. I say potential because always consider that you may not have to give feedback at all. How can that be? Don't forget if you prepare the right QUESTIONS and enter into the conversation with a curious, empathetic approach, you are more likely to prompt self-reflection, increasing self-awareness in the person who made the mistake. You can use models like the SBI (Situation, Behaviour Impact) to frame your questions. When working with a self-aware, mature person, this will help with their development and maintain your relationship. If the person seems to have a blind spot, it's perfectly ok to ask if you can give them some feedback and see what they think.

First, I will conduct a thorough examination of our system to identify any potential loopholes that may lead to mistakes. If any such loophole is discovered, I will take immediate action to rectify it and ensure that no one else encounters the same issue. If it is determined that there was no systemic flaw and the mistake was made by an individual, I will engage in a discussion with the person responsible to understand the reasons behind the mistake. Providing feedback on the consequences of the error, I will issue a warning to prevent its recurrence. Additionally, I will arrange training sessions for all team members to reinforce awareness and prevent similar mistakes from happening in the future.

I have learned, at my own expense, that most of my team members' mistakes were actually my own mistakes. Yes, that's it... and when you start collecting "evidence" about the issue, most of the times you will find out that there was either a lack of information or of training. You always need to consider the background and the root causes before judging or jumping to conclusions. You will see that the feedback you will provide will help you grow, in first place, and then your team members.

The first thing to do is make the individual feel comfortable that this is not a blame game Talk through the mistake Listen Understanding their perspective is key Talk about what it means and how to rectify the situation Agree together what is to be done differently next time Ask how you can help support the individual in any learnings Ask them if they want any added training or other support Make sure a development plan is in place and it’s made clear that this isn’t derailed in any way Give them confidence that you understand and are willing to support them going forwards Explain that mistakes are a part of their growth, it’s how they’re handled that makes a difference

I am a huge proponent of the role of context . Hence the "right time & place" resonates with me. As Vince Lombardi said, "Praise in public; criticize in private." Delayed feedback rarely serves the purpose. However when providing criticism, the goal should be to help the individual understand how they could have handled the situation differently, & not to demoralize them. "Constructive" being the operating word here! It is crucial to avoid blaming. The biggest support you can ever provide your team member is their belief that you will be there for them. Regarding the delivery of the feedback itself. More than what is said,the manner of how it is said matters more.Feedback discussions should be approached with this in mind.

Always give this type of feedback in a private moment, and I like to do it in an informal environment - go for a walk, go grab a cup of coffee... just make it casual and comfortable. Everyone make mistakes (me included, all the time) so it is important to not make it bigger than it was. Try to use an effective but not judgemental tone, and try to understand why the error ocurred. Be an active listener and do not leave the room without giving clear directions and potential solutions so it won't happen again. Let the other person know that you'll be always there to help if they have any question or difficulty. Remember that you're a team, and so...team work is needed. Follow up in the next days / weeks and be supportive.

Don't delay:Prompt feedback maintains relevance and urgency. Avoid rushing: Impulsive feedback can seem harsh. Pick a mutual time: Ensure both are available, attentive, and open-minded. Privacy matters:Avoid public settings to prevent embarrassment. Find comfort:Select a private and comfortable space for an honest conversation. Example: Instead of addressing a mistake in a crowded meeting, find a quiet moment in a private office to discuss it respectfully.

I find a firm, open-handed slap to the face, works well. Not on all occasions, of course, it's not always appropriate. Often, a kick to the nuts is a more effective and memorable deterrent. But a firm, open-handed slap tends to add urgency and weight to a bollocking. And in a way that even the most aggressive of swear words, fails to deliver. ?? What if they're bigger than you? You can't help everyone. If physical intimidation isn't an option, simply manage them out of the business using a suspiciously challenging, performance plan. This, as an added benefit, will also reinforce your position of tyrannical power over the rest of the minions.

By focusing on specific instances and their outcomes, the SBI model encourages direct and meaningful conversations that lead to actionable insights and personal growth, fostering a culture of open communication and continuous improvement.

Team members will make mistakes. Praise, critique, and then encourage is a great method to help team members recover from mistakes. One very successful way to help is with this script. 1. Your parents did a great job raising/educating you. (or something to that order) 2. Based on your current performance and how you handled X (whatever the problem is), I expect both your parents would be incredibly disappointed in you. I question whether they could even love you anymore after seeing how you handled X. 3. I took the time to contact your parents, and they were both very unhappy about this whole thing, but they have confidence that you can overcome this incredible error, get things fixed, and be even better. Make sure parents are alive.

The s**t sandwich feedback method doesn't work. People are not stupid. Sugarcoating constructive feedback only dilutes the critical point, or people miss that point altogether. The aim of feedback is not to make people "feel better" at the end. The aim is to help them learn and grow. Instead, focus on the time and place to make sure they are ready to learn and able to reflect. Otherwise, no "feedback model" is going to work.

Personally I find the sandwich method confusing. It also encourages people not to listen closely when you give them positive feedback as they are waiting for the negative feedback to follow. Often people are aware when situations don't go well and coaching them to discover what they would do differently next time can be more powerful than anything that you say

Empathy should be a primary characteristic for an effective leader. Mistakes happen, it’s human nature. In fact, we as leaders, should encourage our team members to feel supported enough to make courageous decisions that may occasionally end in failures. This is how we as humans learn.

As professionals, we're all striving for success, and it's crucial to ensure every team member feels acknowledged and appreciated. Mistakes are a part of being human, and the aftermath is rarely uplifting. So, as a leader, it's important to not make the team members feel worse but rather encourage them to move forward and continue to be resilient.

Feedback is certainly not a one time thing, but a ongoing process. After the initial correction and remedy action, leader should follow up with their team member to ensure the the mistake is not repeated, and the team member have learnt, improved and made progress. When this happen, it is good that the leader can give appreciation and encouragement to the team member to celebrate the small win and progress. This will make the team member feel appreciated, and the leadership and organization is there to support them and help them in growth and development instead of firing. This will help to set a culture of learning and excellence, improving team member retention, morale which is good for the company

I emphasize its continuity by setting reminders to follow up on the progress after our initial conversation. This follow-up is not just about checking in but also about providing ongoing support and resources that my team member might need to address the feedback effectively. For instance, if the feedback was about improving presentation skills, I'd offer opportunities for practice sessions, recommend resources, or even arrange for a mentorship with a skilled presenter in our team. Regularly scheduled check-ins allow me to acknowledge their efforts and improvements, reinforcing positive behavior and growth. Celebrating their progress, no matter how small, is crucial.

Acknowledging effort is crucial for a supportive work environment. Take a moment to recognize positive efforts, regardless of the outcome, to maintain motivation and morale. Discussing the mistake's impact helps individuals understand its broader implications, fostering accountability and responsibility within the team.

Following up on feedback is a critical step in ensuring successful outcomes for both the company's mission and the growth of employees. This practice serves two important purposes: demonstrating genuine care for the success of individuals and providing an opportunity for retraining in areas requiring development. It is essential never to overlook the chance to support and nurture the growth of your team members.

The feedback you give when someone makes a mistake (which is not repetitive or cardinal) should be focused on the future. You should not waste your time discussing how and why they made a mistake or why they didn't avoid it, as that can easily lead to a blaming game. Instead, focus on suggestions without stating the obvious (what was wrong): for example, next time try to focus more on “x” to avoid the mistake from happening. Alternatively, let's discuss what should be done in the future to react sooner (before the mistake happens) or even discuss how to foresee it. By focusing on a positive future (this is called "feedforward" feedback), this person will learn more and change their behavior more willingly.

I have always found giving the right feedback at the right time helps !! Leaders are responsible to guide, handhold and lead teams to success and in the journey there would be ups and downs which can be improved with feedback. Only when there are mistakes which are repeated inspite of feedback the issue would be deep rooted and would need to carry out difficult conversations.

First off, let's state the obvious. Don't shame in public. Constructive criticism works best when it's one on one and you don't embarrass potentially an already embarrassing situation. Next up. Ask little. Listen alot. Moreover, use open ended questions and reserve opinions until they have gotten it all out. Lastly... Come up with a solution together. Takes the most time. But it's worth it. If you don't have time, agree to speak about it later and follow up. Rinse and repeat.

He used those stories to lead into a mistake I’d made during a presentation.
