As a leader, I often find myself on both sides of the table. If a team is experiencing burnout, it’s crucial for leaders to reflect on their own practices and the work culture they’ve established. Burnout can often stem from leadership approaches such as : ? Culture of Unrealistic Expectations ? Constantly high demands without sustainable pacing ? Normalizing Overwork ? Discouraging Boundaries, Stigmatizing “no” ? Lack of Recognition and Blame for failures ? Poor Work-Life Balance ? Micromanagement ? Inadequate support and delegation A leader’s approach significantly impacts team well-being, making it essential to foster a supportive, balanced, and sustainable work culture.

Burnout is measurable. So if you think your team is experiencing burnout you should measure it. Sometimes we make assumptions about what is happening or who might be experiencing what. Teams are often surprised when we measure specific constructs like burnout. So first measure it to verify that it exists. It's likely worse for some individuals than others. Then you can examine why that occurs with them. Talk about burnout head on, what it is, what it isn't, and its causes. Yes, systems level thinking is necessary and should be applied, but often as a leader you can help your individual team members identify ways to help mitigate burnout. Taking a blended approach can help really move the needle as a team and for individuals.

When faced with a team that works hard and is beginning to feel burned out, it's critically important to acknowledge their feelings, but as a leader, it's also imperative to jump in, assist wherever you can and remove any potential roadblocks impeding success. A good manager is a coach who sets the tone, but also leads by example and can effectively demonstrate that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. Additionally, recognizing efforts and a job well done can sometimes feel inadequate when the pressure is on, but goes a very long way to boost morale in these situations which are hopefully temporary.
