Data integrity is a vital tool for any business. The greatest example I can give you is that if you had a 90° path you had to take, it would look straightforward with no major hurdles. However, if data integrity was not practiced and recorded at 93° in 2 metres you won't tell the difference but after 2 kms there would be a tangible difference. It is now up to us in the business world to make sure we are accurate with our data whether through regular audits, proper quality control and even training on best practices.

One of the most effective techniques to ensure data integrity, in relational databases at least, is to implement referential integrity through primary/foreign keys. I see lots of databases that do not use this technique and the data suffers. Not using primary/foreign keys allows invalid data to enter the database and create havoc, polluting other data as a result. The best way to implement data integrity and improve data quality is to rely on primary/foreign keys to enforce data rules at the point of entry. Other techniques include database triggers and constraints to enforce data integrity. Prevention is better than remediation, so tackle data integrity/quality as far left in the process as possible (preferably in the source systems).
