Your teaching strategies are being undermined by a colleague. How can you effectively address the situation?
When your teaching strategies are challenged by a peer, it's crucial to tackle the issue head-on while maintaining professionalism. To address this delicate situation:
- Request a private meeting to discuss your concerns directly and constructively.
- Express the impact of their actions on your teaching efficacy and student outcomes.
- Seek mediation from a supervisor or mentor if one-on-one dialogue doesn't resolve the conflict.

Address the issue directly by having a private conversation with the colleague, focusing on specific instances where your teaching strategies were undermined. Approach the discussion calmly and professionally, seeking to understand their perspective while clearly expressing your concerns. Emphasize the importance of teamwork and mutual respect in achieving student success. If the issue persists, involve a neutral mediator, such as a department head or school leader, to facilitate open communication. Continue to maintain professionalism, focusing on creating a positive, collaborative work environment.

Seek mediation with a supervisor who is supportive of your goal to provide good instruction. The main purpose of teaching is increasing the students knowledge and enthusiasm for the topic they are learning. Another persons personal attacks should not get in the way of instruction that benefits students. Don’t wait to resolve the problem because it will get worse and worse. You are the captain of your success.

When a colleague undermines your teaching strategies, it’s key to address it calmly and professionally. I’d start by having a one-on-one conversation, approaching them with curiosity rather than accusation, like I did when a colleague publicly criticized my methods. I asked about their concerns and shared my perspective, turning it into a productive discussion. If they continue to undermine me, I’d loop in leadership for support but maintain focus on collaboration, not conflict. In one case, we actually found middle ground by combining our ideas, which led to stronger teaching strategies. Always aim for mutual respect while defending your approach!

Just talk to them. In a respectful, empathetic, yet assertive way. - Focus on both your feelings and your values - why are your strategies important to you, why do you believe in them? - Be open, try to understand their point of view, ideally you can learn from each other. - Have the conversation privately, without undermining each other's reputation or making each other feel uncomfortable. - depending on the workplace, you can also invite a third party to mediate, during later stages (a senior colleague who's perceived as objective but not hierarchically superior, perhaps?), of course, only if the situation drags Good luck!
