Whereas it has always been a best practice to be proactive and reach out to your potential references before submitting resumes, it is particularly important in this day and age. Many people are inclined to let unknown callers ring through to their voicemail. In other instances, I see companies are trending away from land lines and VOIPs and strictly using collaborative communication, meeting, and workspace platforms like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet instead. Providing multiple methods of how to get in touch with your references will not only show your own due diligence but will also speak to your references and their willingness to advocate for you. This will give your potential employer reassurance when considering you!

Always have backup for references. Sometimes initial reference is unreachable due to busy schedule, personal time off, or other unforeseen circumstances. Ask their permission to have them on list, so once needed, you can send their contacts to recruiter right away.

Don't forget to use your professional network (LinkedIn included) to find alternative references. Sometimes, mutual connections can help facilitate the communication.

This is a risk that we take as job seekers. I identify 4-5 references at the beginning of each job search to prepare for this unfortunate event. By planning ahead, a reference not being responsive has never hurt my job search.
