Ugh this has happened to me and it sucked. I quickly pivoted with the "Kill 'em with kindness, bury 'em with facts".I didn't let their shade steal my shine. A little strategic silence can be louder than their noise. Remember, the spotlight's yours, not theirs. And the smart people in the room see right through it and will know you're the person behind the work and it usually comes out in the Q&A. Be the one that takes the high ground.

2 Assert Control

Asserting control is crucial in regaining the floor when a colleague interrupts or detracts from your presentation. Use non-confrontational language and assertive body language to reestablish your position as the speaker. You might say, "Thank you for your input, let's discuss this further after the presentation," or "I appreciate your perspective, but I'd like to focus on this particular point right now." By doing so, you respectfully but clearly signal that you are in charge of the presentation and direct the audience's attention back to your material.

Common anti-heckler tactics don't work perfectly because most likely you know the work colleague who objected to your point or their reputation. Special handle them 3 ways: 1. If they've got clout, say "you're right" + pause. This throws them off: become tongue-tied, more aggressive (looks like a bully) or start muttering they also see your point. Then suggest you talk 1-on-1 after the presentation. Acknowledge to the audience the alternative POV and return the focus on you by restating your point. 2. If a friend, try humor "I thought you were going to go easy on me?" and they will soften the tone! 3. If a foe, don't involve the audience because you could lose control, eg. heckler's allies speak up or spectator antics get you all riled up.

One of the best ways to assert control and diffuse this type of behavior is to turn the tables. Hecklers don't like to be heckled. Their power lies in putting you on the defensive or throwing you off. Instead of getting angry or confrontational, ask the person a direct, open-ended question that requires them to justify their behavior or position. This will stop most people in their tracks. For those that it doesn't, acknowledge, redirect and move forward.

- Stay composed so as to not react impulsively. - Address the colleague’s interruptions or undermining comments with a polite but firm response, redirecting the focus back to your presentation. For instance, you might say, “I appreciate your input and am happy to discuss this further after the presentation.” - If the behavior continues, calmly acknowledge it and suggest a private discussion later to address any concerns. - After the presentation, have a one-on-one conversation with the colleague to understand their perspective and express how their actions affected your presentation. - Aim to find common ground and solutions to prevent future occurrences.
