During assessing the current situation, it is very important to involve employees-on the shop floor/ worker representative . They better understand the “work as done”. The employee or the worker representative should be part of the HIRA( hazard identification risk assessment) process. After that is done a walk on the plant during work operation will help to critically ascertain the risk and hazards identified are significant and that appropriate controls should be in place for them. When this is done it will promote a good proactive approach.

Instances of safety protocols getting outdated, are linked to the protocols having an inadequate review mechanism, that is, when Check and Act part of the PDCA cycle is weak. The "4 I" principle lays its focus on 4 key triggers, when the safety protocols need to be reviewed: Intervals – There shall be a time-based / fixed-interval review of all the safety protocols. Incidents – Whenever an incident or near miss happens at site, all safety protocols related to the same shall be thoroughly reviewed. Review point for lagging indicators. Interventions – This trigger operates as a review point for changes in any leading indicator. Injunctions – This trigger for review is based on the changes in the rules, regulations, and requirements.

First we need to analyse the current situations and areas of improvement. Do the gap analysis with collective involvement of the shop floor team and previous experience/ incident root causes. All data captured and mitigation measures in risk assessment involved and communicate the same with management and shop floor team to improve the safety protocol.

Best way is to conduct JCC (Job cycle check) for all operations. This will review your existing Sops and rest assessments, including training and awareness to ground employee.

The subsequent phase involves reviewing applicable standards and regulations for your plant. Also keep an eye on latest engineering controls trend in mitigation of hazards Keep these two in combination with, the company shall make changes in their HIRA or JSA or JHA and simultaneously adapt the changes through educating and creating awareness among workers. It's again the PDCA cycle shall be followed.

We've found often that the Safety Signages are either worn-out or faded or buried behind bushes resulting in a lack of visibility to hazardous areas. The enthusiasm with which these were first installed dies down with time. The lack of ownership in maintenance and ensuring upkeep of Safety Signs at all times is critical. In a swift-changing and fast growing world, it is imperative to ensure that the workplace safety also stays apace with the changing and growing trends.
