Your physician is resistant to change. How can you get them to see your perspective?

In this case there is a tendency to stay on status quo. To break this status quo , I feel there is a need to understand the reason of status quo , which can be - 1. Selection difficulty by the physician 2. Perceived risk of cost if there is a change 3. Lower trust in the proposer - even if the product or point of view is great 4. Any past experience which was bad or unpleasant 5. Some sort of bias Now if 1 or 2 reasons are identified f, then 2nd approach can be taken to dig deep into those reasons (by using set of structured questions) To conclude , it’s not essential that physician agree to our perspective , but we must ensure they understand our perspective (if not agree) - this also helps to bring change in situation & status quo

I try to understand the person's why. Why do they think that way, and what are their motivations and drives. And see if you can relate it to your way of thinking.

I was recently tasked with overseeing the integration of artificial intelligence-driven applications into our patient engagement platforms. Being an artificial intelligence enthusiast, I had erroneously assumed that all decision makers would be on board. Listening and reasoning were keys to defining the scope, objectives, and implementation schedule for this project.

Physicians have many top protities. Among them are patent care, the bottom financials, and time. Show them how change will enhance at least two of them quickly. The ROI of change must be proven by another physician, incur little or no learning curve, and be affordable or reduce/eliminate penalties.

I work as a Software trainer and my main student body are physicians. I believe that allowing them to see the steps of the bigger picture is what would help them understand the reason for the change. Change is hard at any age, but as adults we like to know WHY, we are changing things. The best way, is the explain the process and allow them to see their part in the process and why it has to be that way.

Include the physicians in the decision making process as much as possible. It's much easier to get buy in when you involve the affected parties earlier and they feel they had a part in it. Start the change management process in the early phases of identifying a change is necessary and selecting the change... not only when its time to execute. This gives you a much larger percent of physicians already bought in, who understand the scope and context.

If there were a single solution, I would be selling it. This is like asking an NFL Quarterback to use a Nerf Football—not going to happen. I have found that most times, Doctors who already possess the propensity for change are always "willing" to listen. Those that do not are not so easy. Sitting down with them and allow them to explain their side and presenting alternatives is best, they might not decide quickly, but the seed has been planted.

It's important to understand the impacts of your change. It may be critical and necessary and promising to yield huge improvements, but of its incredibly disruptive and time consuming for the physicians, frustrations will mount quickly. This will negatively impact adoption of and adherence to the new process. Once you understand the impacts, you can effectively identify support opportunities for the physicians. They need to feel supported in any changes and that misunderstanding something won't be a barrier to patient care and their own productivity measures.

Providing adequate support and resources is key to facilitating a smooth transition for physicians undergoing change. This could encompass training, mentorship, and peer support, tailored to their specific needs and challenges. Monitoring their progress and offering constructive feedback and recognition will further encourage and reinforce positive engagement with the change. Such support not only enhances their confidence and competency but also underscores the organization's commitment to their success in adapting to new practices.

To effectively convince physicians, provide them with evidence-based studies and your own hospital data to prove the importance of the project. Physicians cannot argue with facts. Eventually, your healthcare organization can employ various strategies such as establishing physician-led committees, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, providing education and training on leadership and quality improvement, and fostering a culture of open communication and shared decision-making. And after the project has achieved its goals, provide the physicians with the well-deserved recognition for their significant contribution.

Reframe conflict. Conflicts are often regarded as a bad thing, but this is not always the case. Healthy conflict is important to encourage change and bring fresh ideas to the organisation. Make conflict about ideas, not individuals. Practice conflict with your team so that when a strongly emotive issue does arise, you have the processes in place to communicate differences safely and with progress of the whole in mind.

Remember Charles Dwyer: never expect anyone to engage in a behavior that serves your values unless you give that person adequate reason to do so. This means if they're objecting, you haven't given adequate reason, and the problem is with YOU, not THEM. Own it.

Despite thoughtful preparation and engagement, objections and conflicts may still arise. It's important to confront these challenges directly, listening to and acknowledging the physician's concerns, and then responding calmly and constructively. Finding a compromise where possible, and presenting counterarguments backed by evidence, demonstrates a commitment to transparency and respect for their professional opinion. Successfully navigating these difficult conversations can strengthen the relationship and pave the way for more collaborative future interactions.
