First, I reject the question that my network is crippled. There are challenges in a homogeneous networks and always have been, but there are much fewer now than just a decade ago. The solution here is less about the differences in your devices but in your work flows. How do these devices fit into your work flows and what do they do. Protocols like SMB allow Linux and Windows to share NAS file systems, this allows both operating systems to perform operations on the same files. Protocols like FTP, HTTP/S, and DNS are agnostic. There is no reason for a network to be crippled. Understanding the strength and weaknesses of devices and how they fit into your work flows and use the protocols that are cross platform clear this up in no time.

upgrading your systems shouldn't be considered as double edge sword in my opinion if you carry out regular audits as this would give you a baseline to consider when to do upgrades, changing hardware when they are about to reach end of life, innovation, budget planning, etc. more importantly whatever an organization is planning to do must be aligned with your overall strategic corporate plan when utilizing technology to enhance and improve your business operations.
