Your microphone fails during a live presentation. How will you handle this unexpected challenge?

If my microphone fails during a presentation, which has happened to me in the past, it is important to do the following: 1) Remain calm, acknowledging the microphone failure to the audience -- in a way that might evoke humor, such as saying, "I forgot to bring batteries to today's meeting". 2) Get closer to the audience if necessary and PROJECT voice using the diaphragm, like a drill sergeant. As soon as this is done, ask, "Can you all hear me in the back?" If the answer is, "Yes", drive on. If the answer is, "No", dial up the volume even more. 3) If you have a laser pointer and power point advancer, don't be afraid to walk among the audience members. Look directly into attendees' eyes while engaging them.

With humor. And always take ownership of it, people know what's happened. NEVER place blame on ANYONE else (sound tech, stage manager etc.) even in a joking manner.

Immediately tell your audience that the microphone doesn’t work and march on with your talk! Honesty and transparency builds rapport and will further assist you in ensuring your audience will stay and listen to you!

In a casual address at one of the events in Ahmedabad, India; my microphone went bad not once but thrice. However, each time I engaged with the audience and crafted humorous lines. People loved the promptness and presence of mind and each time the mike went off, a burst of laughter arose in the audience. One of the humorous engagements I made was (When the mike went bad and I took the 2nd one), I said " It is not new to me. Mikes know it well that I am not a great singer. But who would tell these 1 eared device that I haven't started yet". As I share this incident, the self deprecating joke, bursts of laughter, thunderous clapping in the hall; all come afresh and make me nostalgic.

Prenez le public à témoin que les éléments se décha?nent pour vous empêcher de prendre la parole et utilisez votre voix pour continuer. "Jouez" encore avec ceux qui entendent bien ou qui sont "agressés" par le volume (dans les premiers rangs) et ceux qui ont plus de mal à vous entendre (dans le fond de la salle) ... votre intervention se transforme un peu en spectacle, cela permet de faire patienter jusqu'à ce que le problème soit résolu

Always let your audience know! There’s no point in trying to hide this from them. Be honest and alert them on any technical difficulties you may have. If someone is on hand to help you fix the microphone, inform the audience that you’ll be starting your presentation in a few moments. If not, acknowledge the issue (“technology, am I right?”) and continue your presentation. Your audience members will empathize with you and will appreciate the honesty. empathize with you

This is when you need your OUTSIDE voice. Lol. Projecting your voice is all about how far can your volume carry, distance wise. Visualize your voice reaching the back wall. Don't just speak up. Speak out.

I usually don’t use the mic because I walk around throughout the crowd. But my voice is strong. I have perfected pitch, cadence, and volume so that I’m easily heard.

Speaking to a larger audience without a mike can put a lot of stress on your vocal cords especially if it is a large gathering. So can we increase projection of our voice without stressing upon our vocal cords? 1) Do vocal exercises like taking a deep breath and while you exhale, also create a sound aaaaaa and that too from your belly bottom 2) Do "RIYAZ" just like singers do Once you have strong vocal cords, you can manage much larger crowds without a mike

Projection is key! By projecting your voice, this will allow even a large room of audience members to hear your presentation. You’ll want to engage your diaphragm as you’re speaking, and that will help your voice travel throughout the room without putting too much strain on your larynx (voice box).

Using humor establishes your rapport with the audience, but also helps the audience see you as relatable. The audience may have paid money to hear you speak on a subject, but remind them (and yourself) that you are human and that awkward situations happen to you too. You could personify the microphone as a guy named "Mike." Or say something like "this only happens to me on [insert day of the week]." Keeping the mood light will keep your audience engaged, and also alleviate anxiety.

Had a minor setback during my presentation when my microphone decided to take a break. But, thanks to the power of non-verbal communication and audience engagement, I was able to keep the momentum going. Moving on stage is a great idea to engage each side of the audience. Try moving into the audience if need be, especially when imparting trainings. Sometimes move to each person's desk if possible. This creates high engagement and makes your audience be more active.

Use the opportunity of the mic going down to become a memorable presenter! Walk around, engage the audience and use the biggest clearest voice you can. Some of my most engaging presentations have been when I am not tied to a podium and mic so I can move freely. This will also give audience members not sitting at the front of the crowd a chance to experience your presentation from a different angle.

Your body can become a powerful tool for storytelling. Inviting gestures can encourage audience participation. For instance, pointing to different sections of the audience creates a sense of inclusivity. You can move closer to the audience to emphasize a particular point.

quant à s'engager physiquement, pourquoi ne pas engager le public ? Lui poser une question et le faire réfléchir en petit groupes jusqu'à ce que le problème de son soit résolu. Il devient alors possible, lorsque le problème de son est résolu, d'instaurer une discussion bien moins difficile que les classiques questions de fin d'intervention. Adapting your content is like having flexibility in your batting order when you are playing a cricket match and one player gets injured :) Many a times we have more content that what is needed. Uncomfortable situations like this where your mike stops functioning, that extra material comes to rescue. How ? 1) If you had skipped a video (Assuming sound is available but problem is with mike only), you can now play till the time your mike gets fixed 2) If you had planned an activity for later or had skipped one due to time constraint, It is time to utilize it. 3) Asking a summary of what had been discussed thus far, from the audience is also a good idea

J'utilise souvent une carte mentale de ce que je souhaite dire lors d'une intervention pour organiser et prioriser mes idées et ne rien oublier. Se recentrer et recentrer le propos est possible avec cet outil (ou un autre à votre convenance), ce qui est moins évident avec toutes les pages rédigées de l'intervention programmée. Modify or Skip Audio-Visual Elements: If certain sections of your presentation depend heavily on audio-visual elements that are less effective without a microphone, consider modifying them. For example, if you planned to explain a complex technique, you might simplify it or use visual aids like handouts or demonstrations instead.
