Having been in a situation where a line manager in a performance review offered to be my mentor, but did not question my lack of response at any time, nor was there a discussion of expectations, frequency of meetings (there were no meetings at all), it has to be agreed and fully discussed. Also there has to be mutual respect. The lack of success was questioned by higher management, when the issue of the fact that all desired communication was one way, my experience did not seem to be relevant and issues raised by the mentor were those they were seen by others in them. So there has to be mutual trust and respect and open communication. If done properly the system may have been successful. Mentors outside line management may be best.
