The perspective of a Creative Mentor: Change. Experiment. Adopt. Adapt. Rethink. Innovate. All 'forward thinking' words designed to reinforce a positive attitude towards a culture shift. Conversely, the idea is nice but I'm not motivated to change, adopt or adapt because it's extra work. To positively affect the process, begin with defining a deeper motivation. WHY do we want to adapt? How does it benefit the individual? Do you want to offer a better result? Recognition. Do you want to be recognized as a great leader? Status. Do you want to be more loved? Acceptance. What are the core emotions that would motivate me to change? Philosophical values rather than institutional outcomes create impetus.

Engagement with all stakeholders is key to fostering a culture of innovation. Your students, faculty, staff, and alumni possess a wealth of ideas that can drive your institution forward. Discussing 'HOW' to innovate in higher-ed without addressing 'WHY' is like sailing against the wind. For centuries, higher-ed has been the realm of the KNOWN, teaching from on high. We mark papers in red, highlighting mistakes. So you're not just changing processes; you're transforming a culture that equates red marks with failure. This is challenging because innovation comes from NOT KNOWING and willingness to FAIL. Addressing this fear and building a culture of innovation isn't just about green-lighting projects. It requires celebrating 'red marks' as signs of growth. To foster change: 1) Share compelling stories of WHY change is necessary 2) Reframe failure as a step towards discovery 3) Celebrate small wins and learned lessons
