When we manage a complex IT infrastructure, we always focus on automation and orchestration. The first things we automate are: - repetitive processes and common tasks, with the aim of reducing human errors and freeing up resources. We use automation tools to deploy, configure and manage resources efficiently; At the same time we try to orchestrate as much as possible, in the following way: - we implement orchestration systems to coordinate activities between systems and applications, in order to try to easily manage complex and distributed workflows. Automation is key in DevOps but with the caveat that they need to be set up aptly to avoid gotcha. - Identify repetitive and time-consuming tasks that can be automated. Manage an increasingly complex IT infrastructure will require a workflow that allows the Team to review by groups and needs: 1. All inbound data and how it is being stored 2. How it is being processed internally 3. What and how outbound data are sent This mindset allows the evaluation of resources by groups and functions and results in more clear and concise documentation, hence a better path to review automation and mostly, optimization. The benefit is that the process grouping will result in more optimization opportunities and hence cost reduction alternatives, such as batch processing schedulers, group functions by the cloud provider, pipelines review, backup strategies, scale-up and down strategies, or grouping Terraform recipes.

Is it good enough? In my experience, it's very hard to do too much optimization top-down. Yes, you need to give guidelines and limit options to keep complexity in check, but show the cost down to the team level, and let them do optimization too. First of all, they may realize that optimizing the output is more important for them than optimizing cost, which can be beneficial for the big picture.

Your primary need in this regard is to implement a monitoring system and position it in the middle of your infrastructure. By taking advantage of the capabilities of the monitoring system, you can manage resource management correctly, manage your budget correctly, and dispatch resources correctly when necessary.

Security for me is not one of the points, is the framework to keep in mind in every step of the journey: no changes can be made without that.

All the steps include secure your environment. It needs to be taken into account from design to implementation. Tools can help here, but in general you need to build security into your processes. This helps focus the security effort on the parts of your environment where it is most needed. Tool selection then comes more naturally when you know your risks.

In this case; No matter how many offensive players you have in your team, it's about the defense and the goalkeeper. The more accurately and comprehensively you plan your defense mechanism, the more visibility you will have in your infrastructure. Regardless of small or large environment, you must perform identity management, create an authorization matrix and have detection response capability. Keep up to date and build on and on.

Having a common and robust framework/strategy to collect logs, metrics, events, etc is crucial to measure success, discover areas for improvement and to help in diagnosing problems. Observability/telemetry/visibility tooling is widely available and should be included as part of the high-level design with the engineering team as well as the SRE team (if they're different). On the backend side, this includes the ability to create and update dashboards for standard and ad-hoc queries and the ability to enable/disable logging at various levels throughout the system.

As some of my professional colleagues have alluded to in their contributions, monitoring is a critical path that has become a de facto standard. It helps to track utility of any IT asset or infrastructure and determines how much capacity such assets have and when there is a need to expand the capacity to accommodate more. The trick is to strike a balance between maximizing utility based on monitoring and ensuring that where metrics are gathered and further analyzed they provide the requisite insight to guide decision making around the infrastructure in question within the said organization.

I think this point rivals 1 and 2 actually. Without monitoring, the assessments you can make are mostly manual, costly, and infrequent. The only way for sustained good management of complex infrastructure is by continuously monitoring and looking for improvement areas using a data-driven approach. The automation of the assessment itself is critical and should be a team's highest priority. "You can't manage what you can't measure"

When it needs to monitoring the performance of an ever-growing IT architecture, we take an integrated approach that combines state-of-the-art practices, processes and tools. There are best practices gleamed from players in similar sectors or industries, white papers, deep dive symposiums and the likes that provide learning without the need to make expensive mistakes that might cost the organization financial losses or waste. Feedback from the aggregated metrics and logs can also provide some insight that can be applied as feedback to further improve the process.

Monitor performance metrics and use analytics tools to anticipate issues. Continuously assess and upgrade hardware to meet evolving demands. Regularly review and update your security measures to protect against emerging threats.

Trying to move this responsibility to someone else. The most common possible target is a public cloud, but private cloud or infrastructure experts teams may be also valid options.

To lower the complexity, you need to really understand what is making IT Infrastructure complex. Yes, some specialized equipment may required for performance, however, to get an environment that is manageable, strive toward sameness in hardware, software, and configuration.
