I’m not sure I would. That seems kind of manipulative as the question assumes I’m trying to promote a change in their behavior. The behavior that may need to change is my own - as the employer. I would likely ask, “What’s up, brother/sister?”

Empathy is one of the greatest gifts people can give one another. This is particularly true when a person feels demoralized in important parts of life, like the workplace. If a person feels understood, when they have low morale, they will better understand their feelings, needs, the choices they can make, and actions they can take. That is so empowering. If we free ourselves from the need to give advice, and remain open to a wide range of feelings and experiences, we help our clients understand themselves with greater depth. It’s harder to listen, than to give advice. But when we do so, our clients make better decisions, and improve coping. Motivational interviewing puts them in the driver’s seat.

Ask open ended questions that are not going to put employee on defense. Everyone needs to be heard. Allow an employee time to speak and it is easier to understand their behavior. An employee who may be struggling can be supported through situations whereas avoiding the issues will most likely result in failure for the employee and need to rehire and train replacement. By asking questions the employee can gain awareness and maintain responsibility for goals and behaviors after gaining insight. Taking time with an employee, treating them with respect through issues can make a very big difference in how the employee views the company.

I've seen how powerful Motivational Interviewing can be in uplifting employees. By actively listening and validating their feelings, I create a supportive space. Helping them recognize the gap between their current situation and goals empowers them to envision change, fostering their belief in themselves and reigniting their motivation to succeed.
