What is usually festering below the surface of the design/engineering gap is a value vs cost tension. Engineering is typically tasked to deliver against a specific cost target that was likely set before any serious work was done and it usually has very little flexibility. Design is often tasked to overdrive value and that often, but not always, comes at a price. I've heard way to often from engineers that they love the design but have no chance to deliver it against the cost target. I've heard just as often Designers say have no hope of delivering a good design within cost targets. Unfortunately, the value proposition of an enhanced design is often not reevaluated for any number of reasons.

Set a Unified Vision: Start by creating a shared vision that blends user experience with technical needs. For example, if you're working on a new app feature, define goals that enhance usability and maintain performance. Foster Collaboration: Create joint objectives where design and engineering teams must work together. This might be something like improving user feedback integration while keeping the app responsive. Clear Goals: Ensure both teams understand the end goals. When everyone is on the same page, it's easier to find solutions that meet both design and technical standards. In my experience, this approach helps bridge gaps and leads to smoother project execution.

As a Product person, you are expected to work towards achieving consensus among diverse areas with different opinions, but the truth is that everyone should be jointly responsible for this. Establishing a single objective before any discussion is mandatory to avoid wasting time and to arrive at a good definition more efficiently. Start any deliberation by reinforcing the objective and emphasizing collaboration, give everyone space to speak and ensure that all points are taken into consideration. In the end, some trade-offs will need to be made and risks will have to be taken, and a great way to do this is by confirming the understanding with the group, reinforcing in detail the chosen path and why.

Chat, chat, chat. Gather everyone involved and lay down some ground rules. Keep things respectful—no interruptions or personal digs. Be calm and focused. You're the moderator, so guide the conversation. Push for active listening. Encourage the team to openly share their needs and ideas. What solutions can they imagine? What commitments are they ready to make? Ask about times they’ve succeeded together before. Can those good vibes inspire solutions now?
