In my experience the purpose of development work is to change the power dynamics that exist for the most marginalised stakeholders. There is not development without DEI. So this cannot be an after thought. One needs to start collecting data on the existing programs to understand the extent of impact we are having on the most vulnerable populations. Often times the ones most impacted or those who we have designed the programs for dont have a seat at the table. It is important to listen to them and be humble in our program design where we are open to continuously evolving based on the feedback we receive

To integrate diversity and inclusion into CSR initiatives, focus on empowering marginalized communities through targeted programs. Hindustan Unilever’s Project Shakti trains rural women as micro-entrepreneurs, fostering self-reliance. ITC’s Mission Sunehra Kal promotes sustainable farming and market linkages for tribal communities, ensuring inclusive growth. Tata Trusts’ Kalike enhances education and skills among tribal and rural women, enabling better livelihoods. These examples show how addressing gender and socio-economic inequities seamlessly embed diversity and inclusion into CSR efforts. CSR initiatives amplify narratives demonstrating diversity and inclusion as a catalyst for equitable progress and community empowerment.

For a CSR project that is already going on with a full-strength team, it is difficult to introduce more diversity and inclusion in hiring without disrupting the team composition and thus, the pace of work. However, it is still possible to have greater D&I by taking steps such as opening the procurement of goods and services for the project for vendors who represent marginalized communities or gender identities, making the project-related information accessible in multiple languages to facilitate learning, inviting representatives of different groups to study and experience the project in action, and so on.

Diversity & Inclusion is an integral part of CSR/ESG frameworks ( especially the S and the G of ESG ). Therefore, It’s only natural to start first by assessing the current state of the company’s D&I strategies and practices to identify potential gaps. Those gaps will then help set clear goals that are aligned with the company’s vision and ESG global standards.

Diversity & Inclusion should be an underlying principle of any effective CSR initiative. To ensure that your CSR activities are integrating D&I: - Critically analyse your current initiatives: While this can cause discomfort, it is important to critically look at your CSR activities and identify gaps - Actively engage in dialogues with different stakeholders: Bottom-up approach can be your best friend here. Don’t be afraid to have difficult conversations :) - Consult with your network: There is some wonderful work that’s happening around you. Meet exemplary organisations and try to incorporate best practices - Develop an action plan and set milestones - The world is constantly evolving, repeat the first point at regular intervals
