When I have been involved with a rapidly changing environment, I have found the best approach with your supplier base is to share your roadmap with them. What I have found is that many times, your supplier is already skilled in that area and will actually help you gain knowledge and can be a great resource. It can also help you gauge their maturity in the area to give you a heads up if you need to do some market research to find new suppliers that focus on the new area.

Sharing future forecasted requirements are a must. Your supplier is an extension of you. They need all the sales/ demand information you have so they can plan for the facility, equipment, material and labor requirements. They need to be honest about their limitations. Trust is paramount!

Understanding the suppliers, capabilities, capacities and performance is very important aspect in business. Constructive and regular feedback to the vendors, give them visible insight about the gaps and areas of improvement. With increasing or decreasing demand or enhanced technical capabilities, should be clearly identified by doing regular vendor performance analysis, one can always observe if vendors have to make some adjustments to their operations to meet your company’s need. The gap analysis will also dig out What other measures vendors need to take if capabilities and capacities are not adequate to meet the required demand. constructive feedback will always be appreciated which gives vendors road map to achieve higher goals.
