I would first want to understand the colleagues definition of Diversity and what it actually means to them. They may only be thinking of diversity through a single dimension like 'race and ethnicity'. Once I understand their perspective, I can then begin to help them see the wider meaning of diversity and the benefits of driving inclusion through people who are unique and different to each other. I would give examples of that colleagues unique difference and how that benefits the workplace. Explaining diversity , equity and inclusion should not be about trying to justify it and convince people but getting them to see it in practice may begin to open their mind to a world where people should be united not divided.
