Understanding and empathizing with personal emotions is crucial during the rapport-building phase. It's vital to foster trust and respect by creating a comfortable environment for sharing, engaging in small talk, and offering compliments when meeting clients. Then, it's important to gently explore the reasons behind any negative feelings they may have had about previous coaching sessions. This way, we can be attentive and avoid repeating past mistakes based on their feedback.

It takes careful consideration to establish rapport with new clients, particularly those who have had bad coaching experiences. In order to create a secure environment for candid conversation, I first carefully listen to their prior experiences and affirm their emotions. I make them feel less anxious by outlining the coaching process and establishing clear expectations. I modify my strategy to fit their particular requirements and concentrate on getting little victories early on to boost their self-esteem. They will feel empowered in our cooperation if we place a strong emphasis on teamwork. Since dependability and consistency are essential, I keep my word and act in a kind yet professional manner to create a sincere connection. ????

When clients come in with baggage from past coaching experiences, it’s all about creating a fresh start. I start by listening actively—letting them share their concerns and frustrations, and showing genuine interest in what didn’t work for them. Then, I clearly outline how my coaching process is different, setting realistic expectations so they know what to expect and feel more comfortable moving forward. Finally, I make sure to follow through on every commitment; consistency and reliability are key to rebuilding that trust. It’s all about turning hesitation into confidence with a genuine connection!

During a first chemistry call i would ask why they have come to coaching, and how they think/hope coaching can help. I always ask if people have had coaching before and get their experience and then what they are expecting. I can then set expectations of what they can expect of me as a coach and explain how I coach. Its crucial that you like each other and they understand what you can offer and how that will help them

When clients have had negative coaching experiences in the past, establishing rapport requires a deliberate and trust-building approach. Set clear expectations in the beginning, detailing what they can expect in your sessions, and what you expect from them! Include details of your role, their role, and how progress will be measured. Take time to explain your coaching methods, philosophy, and why these approaches have been successful. This shows that you have a structured plan tailored to their needs. Follow through consistently, be reliable, deliver on your promises, and maintain regular communication. Also explain the importance of finding the right coaches and mentors for them so they can avoid this problem in the future.
