Your client wants quick results on the project. How do you convince them that thorough research is essential?
When a client presses for quick results, it's crucial to communicate the long-term benefits of thorough research. Consider these points:
- Highlight past successes where research paid off, emphasizing the improved outcomes.
- Explain the risks of rushing, such as potential rework or missed opportunities.
- Offer a phased approach, giving them early "wins" while continuing in-depth analysis.

Convincing a client that research is essential is like convincing someone that a strong foundation makes for a better house. You can build fast, but without research, it's bound to collapse. Here’s how to frame it: - Educate on ROI: Explain how research ensures that the design will meet user needs and solve real problems, saving time and money in the long run. - Share examples: Highlight past projects where research led to smarter, faster outcomes. - Be transparent: Show them that research isn't just extra work—it’s a shortcut to better, more effective results. In the end, skipping research is like rushing into the unknown. A well-planned strategy always pays off.

Telling a story often helps. Sharing one of mine. Years ago (at the Autombolie Association) we were looking at starting to sell cars online. Despite a desire to build something super-fast, our PM forced us to be crystal-clear on requirements & research. Which included talking to our members/customers. Nearly 10 weeks later (with nothing built) frustrations were high. But we realised (from our reasearch) that this was a complex space and non-core for our business. We decided the best way forward was to (a) white-label a solution from a partner, and (b) build nothing ourselves. Just three weeks later, we had a working solution and a new revenue stream... instead of a failed project and wasted money.
