I have found it helpful to think of feedback from the perspective of the person providing the feedback. Difficult feedback is better than no feedback because it likely means that the person values you enough to want to see you succeed. If action items are not clear, I have found it helpful to thank them for their insight and ask for a recommendation on how to remediate the situation. This helps both parties to quickly move from the identify the problem stage, through acceptance, and into the ideation stage. Ultimately, practice makes perfect. Consistently challenge yourself to run through this exercise and you will be able to shift your mindset from a defensive to a receptive stance.

Ask for permission first before your give any feedback. There is timing, environment, state of mind of receiver which impact feedback, especially when it is negative. 1.
