I had a client who was working with me to increase their flow state. They had read about MI in my content & saw the evidence. Midway through our first conversation, they asked, "I know MI is evidence-based. I still doubt it. Why are most people not using it? Isn't it easier to just tell people what to do?" I paused. Channelled the spirit of MI (PACE). I reflected saying, "Yes. Direct advice is definitely easier to *give*. That's why most people give it. I wonder if you have *received* any direct advice in the past." This invited them to share their own experiences with direct advice-receiving. When we explored their stories curiously, they began to see how MI is more helpful and leads to deeper, more sustainable change.

When clients express skepticism about Motivational Interviewing (MI) principles, it's essential to engage them in a collaborative dialogue that respects their autonomy. Acknowledge their concerns and explore the reasons behind their doubts, which can foster a deeper understanding of MI's benefits. Utilizing reflective listening can help clients feel heard, while sharing evidence-based outcomes from MI can reinforce its effectiveness. Ultimately, the goal is to empower clients to articulate their motivations and ambivalence, transforming skepticism into a constructive conversation that enhances their commitment to change. This approach not only builds rapport but also strengthens the therapeutic alliance.

If a client questions Motivational Interviewing (MI), I’d first acknowledge their concerns, saying, "I hear your doubts, and I’m glad you shared them." I’d then explain that MI is a collaborative approach, where we explore their own values and motivations—it's not about me imposing solutions. I’d clarify that MI is meant to empower them, respecting their autonomy. If they still have questions, I’d ask, "What part of the process feels unclear?" By addressing specific concerns and using reflective listening, I’d aim to clear misconceptions while modeling the MI approach itself.
