By their very nature, new beginnings will contain uncertainty - and unfortunately it is that uncertainty we dislike (which can lead to feelings of overwhelm). 'Will we get on in our new job?' 'Will our colleagues like us?' We just don't know this - yet. I think it can help to remind ourselves of previous new beginnings and uncertainty, and how we have coped and moved through the stages of newness to greater comfort and certainty. It is ok not to have all the answers up front, and not to know everything (even though we think we would like to). And even during our experience, when the newness has worn off, in my experience very wise people will still acknowledge that they don't know everything.

First of all, I'd tell my client that it's totally normal to feel this way. We're all wired to survive, so it's natural to feel stressed and overwhelmed when you're starting something new. And then I would kindly invite them to find a formula based on this acceptance that they could use as a daily mantra to help them cope with the pressure. I have a little mantra that I love: I embrace impermanence. Start your day with these words, and you'll be amazed at the changes you'll notice in no time!

New beginnings are very triggering situations since they may look and feel overwhelming. They come with many changes that happen all at the same time. When presented with this type of situation I like to ask my clients this question: "Do you know how you can eat an elephant ?" The answer is "Piece by piece". We laugh a little bit, ease the tension and then we start splitting this elephant like situation in smaller, more manageable pieces, that can be processed and assimilated more easily.

When a client feels overwhelmed by a new beginning, it’s important to provide support and guidance. Help them set achievable goals and encourage flexibility to adapt to changes. Reassure them of their potential for success and offer continuous support throughout the process.

First acknowledge and validate the feelings. Let them know that it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed during times of transition and that they are not alone. Help them break down their new beginning into manageable steps as per their capability. Encourage them to be adaptable. Remind them that plans can evolve and it's okay to adjust their approach as they learn more and gain experience. Reassuring them of their capabilities can boost their confidence in facing new challenges. Recommend practices like meditation or journaling or nature walk to help them manage stress and maintain a balance. Regular check-ins can provide reassurance and guidance. Let them know that you are there to offer support and adjustments to their plan as needed.
