1 Assess the change

The first thing you need to do is to understand what the change entails and how it will impact your work. Is it a minor tweak or a major overhaul? Does it require additional research, design, or feedback? How much time and effort will it take to implement the change? You need to have a clear picture of the scope and the implications of the change before you respond to your client.

Get a clear picture if the changes will affect deadlines or add work that will affect the agreed costs. It is best to be able to communicate that crystal clear so everyone is on the same page and so the customer can decide where the priority lies.

I create prototypes first and allow for at least 3 user tests before the main build. and I also put it in the contract that any last-minute changes would incur some chargebacks.. and then while scheduling the project, I allow for a lot of buffer time. so if the project is meant to take 1 month to complete, I usually say, it takes a month and a week. Better to underpromise and over-deliver than over-promise and under-deliver because in business we are here to prevent problems.. not solve them. so I usually play the movie forward and work the plan backwards with contingencies... most importantly, I usually put the contingencies in the contract so that all parties know last minute is expensive.

The first thing is to assess how long it will take to revise. Then communicate to the client how the revision can affect the deadline. Lastly, either negotiate a faster simpler solution or call on some help. If the deadline isn't critical then push it forward. If it's critical figure it out somehow.

2 Communicate with your client

Once you have assessed the change, you need to communicate with your client as soon as possible. Explain the situation and the consequences of the change in a polite and professional manner. Don't be afraid to say no if the change is unreasonable or impossible. Alternatively, you can offer some options or alternatives that can accommodate the change without affecting the deadline. For example, you can suggest a partial delivery, a compromise on the design, or a different format. Be transparent and honest about the pros and cons of each option.

Très souvent, la notion de date limite est surtout importante pour mon client, plus que pour moi. Le processus de création est, avec l’expérience, bien rodé, et il est assez aisé de définir le temps que prendra un projet. Il m’est pourtant arrivé parfois que des projets soient si longs qu'une année n'ait pas suffi. Cela est d? au fait de travailler avec de grands groupes sur des sujets parfois sensibles, nécessitant la validation de plusieurs collaborateurs à travers le monde. à ce moment-là, il n’y a guère de chose à faire, sinon d’accepter cet état de fait. Dans ce cas précis, la première chose à faire est donc de prendre son mal en patience ?????
