If a client is in career coaching and doesn't want to talk about career goals, then they might not be ready for coaching. Who said I had to break down their barriers? Where's the empathy in that? If this person isn't ready to talk about this, I would delay the coaching until they are ready. Perhaps they need therapy or other help to clear some other issues before they can focus more on their career.

To help a guarded client share their career goals, I’d create a safe and non-judgmental environment by actively listening and showing empathy. Asking open-ended questions can encourage them to express themselves more freely. Sharing my own experiences and vulnerabilities can help build rapport, while gradually introducing topics related to their aspirations can make them feel more comfortable opening up.
