Your C-suite client challenges your strategy in executive coaching. How will you respond effectively?

Embrace feedback:) Why in the world are they fighting you on strategy? You’re a coach - not a consultant. Get your attention back on them - not some strategy about their situation. “What’s going on in you right now as you’re challenging me?”

It does not matter what level the client is - it’s always interesting to get feedback. Embrace it with curiosity, and use questions to understand more what their concerns are.

When a C-suite client challenges your strategy, respond with active listening and openness. Acknowledge their concerns and ask clarifying questions to understand their perspective. Provide data and examples to support your strategy, but also be flexible and willing to adjust your approach based on their insights. Emphasize collaboration and demonstrate your commitment to achieving their goals together.

In responding to feedback, I reflect on how Spiritual Intelligence guides my understanding. Feedback is not just criticism; it is a “Mirror” revealing our blind spots. This perspective shifts the conversation from defensiveness to a shared journey. I invite clients to explore not only their professional goals but also their inner aspirations. This “Holistic” approach creates a safe space for transformation. The true essence of coaching lies in our ability to connect deeply with ourselves and others. When we integrate these Spiritual Insights, we enrich our coaching relationships and foster meaningful change.

As a coach, we have to clarify the objectives to have a better understanding in the travel. If we need to realign, we can do so with mutual consensus. We as coaches can customise the approach based on having proper aligned objectives. This is not only for the c-suite client. But this is applicable for everyone.

When your coaching strategy faces scrutiny, it's crucial to articulate the reasoning behind your methods clearly and confidently. Detailing the theoretical underpinnings and the evidence that supports your approach can demystify your techniques for your client. This explanation should include how each method aligns with their specific goals and the anticipated outcomes. By openly sharing the logic and research backing your practices, you not only validate your expertise but also strengthen your client's confidence in the process. This level of clarity and educational insight enhances the collaborative nature of your relationship, helping to build a solid foundation of trust and mutual understanding.

Providing a clear rationale for your chosen approach in executive coaching is crucial for maintaining credibility and trust with your C-suite client. Rather than focusing our mind on retaliating with the client, we as coaches can focus on exploring feasible opportunities. To do this, a high level of emotional intelligence & rational mindset is needed. If they are exploring out of the box ideas or if we help them to move out from their limiting beliefs, it will really impact them progressively.

If we as coaches are changing our style based on the customers requirements, it is not wrong. Rather we are customising based on the client. By this, we are not going weak rather, we become stronger in this process. This helps us to have a personalised coaching experience for the client. By this, our c-suite client will co-operate in a better way

Adapting your strategy in response to a client's challenge doesn't mean abandoning your expertise. Instead, it involves making thoughtful adjustments that respect your client's insights while still drawing on your professional knowledge. By strategically adapting, you can create a more personalized coaching experience that resonates with the client's individual style and preferences. This tailored approach can lead to more meaningful progress and a stronger coaching relationship.

Coaching is all about partnering with the client. And the highest level of such a partnership is when it is totally equal. First of all, the coach must learn and practice to trust the client and demonstrate respect by acknowledging and allowing the client choose for themselves, afterall a Client is responsible for thier choices eventually (ICF CC 2.1), a coach must not govern, tell or judge the client. Secondly, the coach must invite the client to share more about what makes them think this way and how will it serve the overall objective. Reflection of the clients lens is quite an important aspect for the client to experience and it helps the client grow potentially ???? And lastly, the coach should create a safe space and listen ????

Coaching is about meeting people where they are and creating a journey path that meet the objective and client requirements. If the chemistry conversations, contracting conversations have taken place in letter and spirit, it is less likely to have any serious disagreement in the approach. However, if a disagreement surfaces, we go back to listening, aligning on objectives and outcomes, re-contracting and moving forward together. End of the day, coach and client do not have a conflicting objective. Co-creation is the key

Well, anyone can challenge..point is what's the back ground and intention. 'C' Suit doesn't make one a know-all person. It happens with coaches who pitch for work. Well, I have a little different thought.. If my Coachee challenges my strategy, then well, I say it openly that they must find someone with whom they are comfortable because it is about changing themselves. Not the coach. I am a coach having worked intensely on creating, developing my own trademarked process of coaching. I offered myself as a coach at 60 after rigourous work. Tell me what you want. I will give you and HOW. Don't challenge. Collaborate. Because it is about you, for you and not me...

I encourage my coaching clients to continually challenge every aspect of their environment. As their coach, I also invite personal challenges. In non-directive coaching, you will use the challenge as an opportunity for the client to reflect on what it means for them rather than your performance or effectiveness. What emotions, thoughts, and behaviours does the challenge represent for them? You may also make observations about how the challenge makes you feel to enable them to develop more emotional intelligence. For example, "I am noticing that when you tell me my approach to coaching is a failure, you use a level of aggression that I find surprising. How useful would this behaviour be for you?" Challenging behaviour - engage with it!
