I'm willing to work after hours occasionally if my boss offers flexibility in return. However, if they're consistently rigid and don't accommodate my needs, I'll prioritize my work-life balance and be unavailable outside regular working hours.

What I learnt from my 15years It exp, leading around 100 member team, below are few tips I would share: - a few times, based on need of the project, is ok. - but it should not become a repetitive behaviour. - Discuss with your boss, why its getting a frequent thing, and look for solution, on how we can complete work within the set office time. - Discuss with clients and educate them, that for long term team growth & delivery, frequent time extensions would lead to burn-out. With discussions, this can be sorted.

Establishing boundaries around after-hours availability is essential to maintain work-life balance and productivity. 1. I start by having a respectful conversation with my boss, explaining my commitment to both work and personal time. I outline when I can be available after hours, such as for urgent needs. 2. Together, we clarify what constitutes an “urgent” matter that might need after-hours attention. This avoids confusion and sets expectations. 3. To provide coverage without constant availability, I might propose staggered schedules or team rotation for after-hours needs. This shows initiative and reduces dependency. 4. I aim to set an example for healthy boundaries, ensuring I’m at my best when working. Our life is more than just work.

Most professionals understand the need to set boundaries, but the challenge lies in doing so without causing friction—especially with colleagues and clients they’ll continue working with. I believe setting boundaries can be done professionally and effectively when approached with empathy and focus on sustainable, quality-driven outcomes. By focusing on the how, we can ensure the team’s well-being without sacrificing productivity or harmony in the workplace.

You teach people how to treat you. Stop answering email after hours. Draft your response or schedule it to be sent during business hours. When my boss expected me to be available after hours, I realized the importance of setting respectful boundaries. I started by having an honest conversation about my availability, making it clear when I could respond and when I needed personal time. I used tools like email auto-responders to gently remind others of my limits while still being professional. For non-urgent matters, I proposed addressing them the next day or delegating if possible. By communicating openly and offering practical solutions, I was able to manage after-hours expectations without straining my work relationships.
