Your architectural design is under scrutiny. How will you defend its integrity?

Well, most people think that concept is not that important, when your design can be functional!! According to me, every architect concept is the most important thing, as it is the only thing that differentiates us from any other!! We bring a life, a story, or the emotion to the design!! One needs to understand that, any design is always under scrutiny and if it is not that means you are not doing your job well ! So it is very important to have and think about a concept, and have a great hold over your concept , so that any scrutiny or anything cannot create any problem to the base of your design!! The concept is the main and most important part of any design. In other words you can say that "Concept is the foundation of any design"

First and foremost, you have to understand that your design is always under scrutiny. From there, take the emotions out of it and be honest. Answer why you did the things you designed. There are reasons others don't understand all that went into it, and/or there are things you can learn from others perspective. Expect that your designs will be scrutinized, and make it part of your process. You'll become a better Architect.

To defend your architectural design, start by clearly articulating the core concept that guided your process. Whether the focus is sustainability, cultural influences, or innovative spatial use, this concept forms the foundation of your design. Demonstrating how each element serves the central idea showcases the thoughtful integration of form and function, highlighting the strength and intentionality behind your work.

Commit with the essence of your project. What is the reasoning behind it? Break this concept into a clear and simple narrative that will align with your clients ideals. Once you can answer the what, how and why of your project in a few words, then you'll have the guidelines to your process.

In my experience, keeping it simple and straightforward (KISS) always works best. Complexity often leads to confusion and inefficiency. The KISS principle reminds us that simple solutions are often the most effective.

Additionally, simplicity results in better maintainability, quicker troubleshooting, and smoother scaling. While complex solutions may seem appealing, KISS ensures that designs remain effective, stable, and easy to evolve over time. In essence, simplicity drives sustainable, long-term success.

L'importance d'une justification de conception réside dans sa capacité à clarifier les choix architecturaux. En expliquant comment ces décisions répondent aux objectifs du projet et aux besoins des utilisateurs, on montre que chaque élément a été soigneusement pensé. As designers, we have a power that goes beyond us. We are able to create spatial experiences that can blend, reject or re-invent the perception of an already existing place, without compromising it's integrity as a whole. We are specialist at creating the most disruptive relationships between spaces and yet make them feel like they belong with each other, as if the opposite attraction becomes in fact, a perfect balance.

Keep one thing in mind. “Anybody can create a good design”. Every design is special and unique its own way, so what creates your design different or keeps its integrity is the functional aspect of it. Until your design is technically sound and functional and adheres to the needs and requirements of the client and user, no one can take the integrity of your design down.

A lot of architects tend to be focused solely on the visual aspects of what they design. By doing so they neglect the structural and other technical fundamentals and capabilities of our build environment, which in turn leads to more expensive construction methods and/or a deviation on the initial visualization of the project as the technical element was not an integral part of the initial thought process. Hence having a good understanding of the structural capabilities of materials as wel as the technical repercussions of the design brief (now and in the future) is crucial for any architectural firm.

Architectural design 101 comes with knowing by core that the cause, purpose and belief of your concept is something that comes from the critical analysis of all surrounding elements that play a role within the context, as well as the elements tangled with the idea. However breaking down this narrative into a message that we convey through space, experiences and atmosphere is something we discover along the way as our design evolves through time.
