By far the most important skill in all of marketing. Knowing your audience! All marketing efforts hinge on if your ads resonate with the target audience or nah. It don't matter how clever you are, if your message doesn't hit home. You're not getting the sale

What a copywriting expert said to me… When I was a newbie in copywriting. “ If you spend time understanding the human mind and hang out with them to know their hidden pains… You can effortlessly write a copy that would make them pull their money out of their pockets. ” So dear friend, understanding your audience is the first & mooooost vital step in writing a good copy. Copywriting is about three things: - your product - your audience - the insight. Now basis this understanding, you start crafting the brand's tone of voice, messaging, and context. Audience plays a key role in determining your message and approach as you need to talk in a language that they relate to and give the examples that they find interesting.

Strong writing skills: This includes excellent grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. Clear and concise communication: You need to be able to communicate complex ideas clearly and succinctly to your target audience. Understanding of marketing principles: Knowing the basics of marketing and advertising will help you create copy that aligns with your client's goals. Research skills: You'll need to research your target audience, competitors, and the industry to craft effective copy.

Understanding your audience is paramount in copywriting success. Identify their needs, desires, and pain points. Tailor your message to resonate with their emotions and motivations.

Beyond knowing your product or service, it's most important to know what makes it - and you - different from the competition. Your value proposition is the foundation for all your messaging. It should clearly state why people should choose your offer over everyone else. All other copy trickles down from the value proposition. When I write copy for a client I strive to ensure it aligns with the VP.

The product should always be the center of the story. Now by that I don't mean craft a hard selling campaign. What I mean is the product should rise above the status of a commodity and become a symbol of something more.

Understand its features, benefits, and unique selling points. Highlight how it solves a problem or enhances the customer's life. Communicate its value clearly and concisely, ensuring that your copy reflects a deep understanding and appreciation for what you're promoting.

Product is the lifeblood of your business. Your unique selling proposition is the factor that differentiates your product from others. You should tell them about the benefits of your product and how it is better than what they have tried in the past.

The purpose should always be more than just selling the product. Ofcourse generating sales is the key, but there should also be an affinity building motive behind it. In the sea of competitors today where not many products have any defined USP, the role of your copy becomes to form a emotional and cultural connect with the reader that goes beyond the advertised product's features. For example, both an apple and a samsung make great phones, but an apple consumer always thinks design and tech first, while a samsung consumer is always functionality first.

Clarity on your copywriting purpose is essential. Define the goal – whether it's driving sales, building brand awareness, or inspiring action. Align your message with this objective, ensuring every word serves a strategic purpose.

Using the Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action (AIDA) or Problem Agitation Solution (PAS) framework can clarify the purpose of your copy. When you follow one of these frameworks, you have a clear understanding of your copy's goal and the specific action you want to elicit from the audience.

The knowledge about your medium is very critical as that gives you an idea about the reader's consumption time and attention time. For example, when you write for a billboard medium, you need to be very sharp and crisp. As within 6-8 words and with a stark looking visual, you need to communicate everything to a driver who is driving probably at 45mph and would be seeing your ad for only a few seconds. Similarly, when you do magazine advertising, you tend to have the reader's attention for a slightly longer time which gives you the leverage to hook the reader with an interesting buildup and reveal. Same logic goes when scripting a television or digital commercial.

What I've observed is that a sales page can range in length, from two pages with 800 words to a more extensive version of 3000 words. Similarly, an email copy might be as brief as 150 words or extend to 200-250 words. The length largely depends on the medium you're using. It's important to understand the medium of your copy before you start writing it.

As you learn the craft of copywriting, you should build key ancillary skills as well. Boost your style and editing skills with June Casagrande’s books. (My favorite is “It was the best of sentences, it was the worst of sentences.”) Understand what motivates your reader’s behavior by reading books by Cialdini and Kahneman. And dedicate time each week to reading the latest studies coming out of psychology journals. Engineer stronger arguments by reading "Rulebook for Arguments" and "Being Logical." Strengthen your understanding of writing as UX by reading “Writing is Designing” by Michael J. Metts and Andy Welfle. This is where copywriters start to see the biggest breakthroughs in their skill development.

The only way to improve craft is to read more and write more. And i am not talking ads alone. Read up interesting blog articles, short stories, novels etc. Anything that tends to draw you in is an example of good copywriting. And then apply those principles to the ads you write. Because that's how you can always be fresh in your approach and effective in your copy.

I believe practice is the key to crafting copy that adheres to the established rules of copywriting. In addition to resources shared in this article, websites like swiped. co, swipefile.com, ClickBank, and others offer excellent examples of copy. These can be found easily and used as a foundation for your own work.

To improve, you must be teachable and learn as you go. There will be mistakes along the way, you'll fail, but you'll also learn.

Relationships are EVERYTHING. Copywriters are a dime a dozen, and anyone can learn the art/science of persuasive writing. Forget the shiny websites and massaging your messaging to make you sound better than you actually are (as a newbie, you'll probably be a little crap at the copywriting at first, let's be real): Spending time building relationships with more experienced and trusted people in the copywriting community will get your foot in the door faster than a fast thing. So if you're an introvert, you're going to have to find ways to do this in sustainable way – be it joining paid online communities or in-person events with lots of rests baked in. Whatever you do, always remember to build relationships.
