Motivating your team is one of the most important aspects of leadership. You want them to feel engaged, inspired, and valued for their work. But how can you help them learn and grow in their skills and careers? In this article, you'll discover some tools that can help you manage your team's training and development, and how to use them effectively.
Before you invest in any tools, you need to understand what your team needs to learn and grow. You can use surveys, interviews, feedback sessions, or performance reviews to identify their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and interests. You can also ask them what kind of tools they prefer, such as online courses, podcasts, books, or mentors. This will help you tailor your training and development plan to their individual and collective needs.
Before you look externally or think about solutions, you need to understand not only their needs but their goals. If you don't know what motivates them, you could have the greatest tools and subscriptions in the world but you're not going to be effective in motivating them. So first spend time with them really showing that you care about their development and helping them accomplish what they want to accomplish. Only after you align on what their goals are, can you then effectively look at potential tools to help them achieve them and grow.
A key to getting started on this is to hold 1:1s. Meet with them, if you can, in a relaxed setting, and build rapport with each team member. Learn what motivates them from both a work & personal perspective. Listen hard, speak softly. Gain a baseline of what they feel is working well and what isn’t. Make note of these findings and aggregate them - are there themes emerging? This is step #1.
Pay attention to your team, their thoughts, dreams, and personal objectives. Everyone is driven by something; your role is to uncover what inspires each of them. I emphasize seeking connections between the aspirations and ideas of the team members and the organization's goals. Occasionally, these align seamlessly. At such times, I craft strategies to support the team in achieving their objectives, utilizing their input as a guiding force.
Make learning social. Digital resources are great, but real transformation happens in human connections. Set up peer mentoring circles for team members to teach each other new skills. Have team members give miniature TED-style talks on new topics or lead informal weekly workshops. At the end of the day, transformative learning is emotional, not just intellectual. That only happens in community. Lead with that truth.
Utilize online learning platforms like Udemy or Coursera to offer diverse courses aligning with team interests & professional development goals. Implement project management tools such as Trello or Asana for transparent goal setting, fostering collaboration & tracking progress. Integrate communication tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams for seamless information exchange & virtual mentorship. Leverage gamified learning apps to make the learning process engaging & enjoyable. Regularly conduct virtual workshops or webinars using tools like Zoom or Microsoft Teams to encourage knowledge sharing & skill development. These tools create an interactive & dynamic environment, nurturing a culture of continuous learning & growth within your team.

There are many tools available online that offer courses, tutorials, webinars, podcasts, or books on various topics and skills. You can also create your own resources, such as guides, checklists, templates, or videos, that are relevant to your team's work. It's vitally important that you provide your team with the resources necessary to develop. Too many organizations provide little in the way of mentorship or continual career development. Over the years, I've hosted weekly meetings intended to cultivate generalist skills among colleagues: things like public speaking classes, mastering spreadsheets, and presentations from other business units. Additionally, I've found company book clubs to be useful. We're all assigned a few chapters of a pertinent book and then we meet to discuss what resonated, why, and how it's changing our behaviors. Sharing relevant blogs or podcasts is invaluable, too. It's important to provide a bit of context about why you're sharing it though. Don't just forward it.
Boost team motivation by leveraging tools for continuous learning. Introduce online training, collaborative platforms, and industry resources to facilitate skill development. Incorporate project management tools to enhance organization and track progress, fostering a motivated and growth-oriented team.
You should provide your team with challenging and interesting tasks. When recruiting, I aim to find individuals who are motivated by complex and novel cases. In this way, they are motivated to perform at their best. By giving them non-trivial challenges, they will feel motivated and your team will be more productive. For instance, one possible task could be to improve the team's task tracking system.

Tracking a person’s progress can be very influential to their efforts, the Hawthorn Effect shows this: The Hawthorne effect is a type of human behavior reactivity in which individuals modify an aspect of their behavior in response to their awareness of being observed. Using this knowledge and combining it with the individual goals of the employee and showing how those goals overlap with the company’s goals makes the individual more compelled and motivated to achieve those goals. This creates the ultimate win:win scenario for both the employee and the company. The employee will will WANT to keep track of their own progress because it serves THEM to do so in attaining their goals which are aligned with the team and company’s as well.

It promotes communication skills and the growth of respect among peers.
Collaboration is "magic". I find collaboration enhances the practice of my team but my practice as well. I encourage collaboration and I start by being open and honest with my team. I also recommend using collaborative tools, such as One Note, Teams, or SharePoint, whereby the entire team can work on a common goal or a subset of the team. Then I will often have calls to work through our collective solution and adjust it real-time. It fosters an environment of collaboration both online and in meetings. Importantly, it further fosters trust and a team-connection.

Learning and growth comes from using the skills and knowledge obtained. The missing piece is often the lack of follow through with real work application of newly acquired information. Set expectations and challenge your team to be active with their knowledge and develop their expertise. (e.g. How would you implement this new stragetic to improve our workflow within the next 14 days?" Motivation comes from intrinic motivation and/or external incentives, which is not necessarily tied to learning and growth. Develop a roadmap for individuals with incentive that works for them, and set milestones so the growth journey is continous -- there needs to be other things to be motivated by other than a pay cheque.

The best tool for "motivation", is how you are as a leader, and the environment that you espouse. - Are there clear accountability partnerships in place - do people know who does what, what they're on the hook for, what you're on the hook for and how you all work together? - Along with high accountability, does the support and capability structure look just as strong? - Are roadblocks sought out and mitigated/removed to enable your people to do their best work? - What are you and other leaders modelling? do social norms fuel or fizzle performance and motivation - Is there an environment of both psychological and psychosocial safety? - Are collaboration, engagement and trust, actively fostered?
