For those of us who are crunched for time (or simply prefer listening), podcasts and audiobooks, can also expose us to new ideas, perspectives, vocabulary, and ways of organizing information.

Over the past year, I've focused on developing my writing skills by building a daily writing habit. I write at least 500 words per day using a variety of methods. Sometimes, I write a podcast outline, respond to LinkedIn posts, design curriculum, craft articles, etc. Some writing outputs don't have a feedback component, while others do. I want to avoid becoming obsessed with metrics (e.g., likes and comments), which will cause me to lose sight of the purpose. However, I want to grow my written communication skills and share insights with others, so some of my efforts involve peer feedback. I'm currently part of a writing group that meets weekly with a coach. Having accountability partners has helped me stay focused and motivated.

One thing I've found helpful is to write often. I created a weekly newsletter for all faculty at my current Middle School. Without this positive pressure, I may not take advantage of writing beyond sending emails. I've found it to, over time, reduce the anxieties I have about writing.

It is very wise to consider using good educational softwares to check and improve your writing quality and clarity. Also, listen to the podcast of highly eloquent individuals in the likes of Jordan Peterson to learn and master new words.

AI tools, like ChatGPT, are your best friends! Beyond asking the tool to proofread, you can also ask it to improve the clarity of your writing, and give you tips on strengthening the piece. I deeply analyse the changes that are made to my writing, so that next time I can consider those recommendations.

Heightened awareness of your audience and purpose significantly influences your writing skills, particularly as an educational leader addressing diverse groups like students, teachers, parents, policymakers, or the general public. Recognizing the varied expectations, needs, and preferences of each audience is crucial. Similarly, understanding the purpose of your writing—whether it's to inform, persuade, instruct, or inspire—directly shapes your tone, style, and content. Before you embark on writing, a pivotal question to consider is: Who is your audience, and what is the purpose behind your writing?

Write. Write Write. Start a blog. Write articles. Write a chapter for peer's book. Write your own book. Share social media content with your comments added. Post your own original content and engage with commenters. Reply to posts on Linked In. Especially practice writing lots of questions to other people online -- ask them to explain how they did what they did/got where they are--people love to talk about themselves. Then enjoy the dialog. Offer to proof and give feedback to other people work, lessons, articles- they get feedback and you get to practice writing and expand your network.

Immerse yourself in different writing styles and genres relevant to your role as an educational leader. This could include educational journals, articles, books on leadership and communication, and even sample letters or reports from successful educational leaders.
