I think to improve as the supervisor you need to have a peer review from the people who you lead let them do a survey or a face-to-face review with you and tell you what they believe you do well at, and then the things that you don’t do well at, and you need to understand that you have to be Criticism and not retaliate against them because maybe personally think you’re a great communicator but person feels like you’re not as good of communicating something to them as person aided so ask person how can I get better at that you should also be reading books you should be listening to podcast you should be find Other people in that same role in a business like that or different businesses and seeing what do they do?

In my experience seminars are a great way to gain knowledge on leadership principles. The key is to take what you have learned and put it into action only through doing do we truly gain the level of proficiency needed to be a good leader/supervisor.

In my experience, personal coaching and mentoring can be the most effective because it can be tailored to your respective needs. The coach can develop a plan to meet the specific needs and move at the appropriate pace. A personal coach can also bring perspective to the situation that is sometimes lost in group dynamics.

Create a coaching/mentoring circle whenever possible. Look for experts both internal and external who have specific skills or experience that will help you. When possible ask more than one person in your circle how they would handle a situation, or if they can give you examples of similar situations from their history, so that you can learn about different approaches and decide what feels like the best match for your situation and style.

I'm a fan of books and book clubs. Radical Candor, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The 5 Choices are all great, but there are many others which are more introspective and give you insights into both your own styles as well as those of the people you work with. The Arbinger Institute, books by Brene Brown and Parker Palmer all have great insights. Others that address personality traits and how they interact (MBTI, Strengths Finder, etc) are also useful. I also highly recommend learning about unconscious bias and DEIB in order to be more inclusive in hiring and supervising all staff.

When possible, consider going through a 360 degree feedback and evaluation process. Obtain feedback from a large group that represents people with whom you interact in different ways at work, including as a supervisor. Observations from others will help you understand how your actions and behaviors are perceived and will give you information on areas you can work to improve. Use this as a starting point to determine what skills, both hard and soft, you should develop. Look for common threads or themes and be open to the learning experience.

Learning is great. However, something I found missing in this article is practicing. I mean actively practicing and reflecting on how you can improve your skills. Trying to understand your mistakes and not repeat them. It can be complex because you don't always get honest feedback. I would recommend Toastmasters as a place to learn. It is a safe place where practice and feedback are the top priorities.
