You want to get a promotion. What's the best way to demonstrate your leadership skills?

The most powerful framework I have come across to truly understand and know your brand, is Simon Sinek's Start with WHY. Its about how great leaders inspire action and I believe, great brands should be great leaders. Its a simple framework that can be understood and applied by anyone and works off the premise of how story is hardwired into the human experience. It's true what he says, people connect with WHY you do things, not WHAT or HOW you do it. Do you know your Brands WHY?

Understand what makes you unique and valuable in your role. Like finding your favorite coffee blend, discover what skills and traits set you apart and own them!

Lead by example. Establish a high standard of performance and conduct for yourself and others to emulate. Show professionalism, honesty, responsibility, and devotion in your job. Take initiative: Proactively discover areas for improvement or growth in your job or the organization. Take the initiative to suggest and implement creative ideas, projects, or activities that add value and help achieve strategic goals. Communicate Effectively. Develop effective communication abilities to express ideas, give guidance, and inspire others. Clarify your vision, goals, and expectations, and aggressively seek input and concerns from team members.

Listening, and taking mental notes of what your clients greatest concerns are. Realized that you may not be able to fulfill them all, but aligning your expertise to their expectations to achieve one common goal. Then make it happen.

I believe it is important for a leader to lead by example. Personally, I would not expect my Team to do anything I would not roll up my sleeves to do. That is the essence of a Team. There are times when division of responsibilities are critical to ensure proper controls, but that should not obviate the concept of Team. The most effective leaders I’ve had over my career are those that inspired action by their examples. That’s the type of leader I always try to be.

Learn to listen to your team and keep your mind open to new ideas. No one learns anything from talking. Collaborate, inspire and innovate, and give credit where credit is due to members of your team. You succeed as a team, not as an individual.

Commonly missed is the ability to respectfully and tactfully use the challenge process. Every industry undergoes changes and the ones that want to maintain a competitive advantage have to keep an open mind to it. This means someone has to throw the red flag up to challenge the “way we’ve always done it” ideas and look for the next, more effective, affordable, or safer ways… even if that means challenging your manager, doing it the right way can lead to great benefit. Using the challenge process the right way also means involving those you lead for feedback and opinion, which can be another way of leading by example.

Exemplary leadership is instrumental in earning a promotion, demonstrated through leading by example. As a leader, I consistently strive to embody the qualities and behaviors I expect from my team, setting a high standard of performance and professionalism. 1. Listen to what is spoken/obvious and to what is unspoken/subtle. Sometimes the latter is more important in finding real solutions. 2. As a brand manager that covered graphic design and social media content, I wanted to prove that I had the skills necessary to take on PIO to be a communications director. I volunteered to write articles that we would be submitting to news media and took initiative to teach a class on graphic design for our organizations employees so that they would be more engaged with our brand guidelines. By providing my insights and expertise and what I do, I was able to establish myself as a subject matter expert in my organization.

You demonstrate your leadership potential and readiness for promotion through mission accomplishment and the growth and advancement of your subordinates. If your people succeed, you succeed.

This is the big one for looking for a promotion. So you can be amazing at your job and that is the first thing that gets you noticed, but its being excellent at helping others succeed. That is the real skill that shows you can manage others and more help people that are not even at your company grow as well. This, for me, is the singular thing that shows that you are ready to grow.

Mentoring others is a cornerstone of effective leadership, and I am committed to guiding and developing the talents of my team members to help them reach their full potential. As a mentor, I prioritize building strong, supportive relationships founded on trust, empathy, and respect. By sharing my knowledge, expertise, and experiences, I empower others to develop new skills, overcome obstacles, and grow professionally. Moreover, Through my role as a mentor, I not only contribute to the success of my team members but also foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence within the organization, positioning myself as a leader worthy of promotion.

Always listen to others, as they will have good ideas and transferable skills. A good leader will listen twice as much as they talk. Two ears, one mouth. Collate ideas, and ask your team on methods to proceed. Teamwork will always beat loan workers.

Some of the most rewarding moments of my career have been when I have had the privilege to mentor others, and then watch them achieve their goals. I've also never learned more about my field of expertise, and myself, than when I was teaching it to someone else.

Run toward the hard problems and find a solution. I’ve never once backed away from an opportunity to excel, instead I always stepped forward and said I’ve got this. Other leaders and change agents will rally to that kind of confidence and you will find yourself surrounded with huge talent that makes tackling the problem a joy.

The one constant in life is change, and complacency is the death of growth. Don't just embrace the changes happening around you, recognize when you have become too comfortable in your current position and seek out change! You never truly know what you are capable of until you are challenged.

Do more than you have been hired to do. Stand apart from your team in process improvements, clarity in communication, mentor people and estabilish the expertise to be able to handle more than you have been given. 1. Don't slog but manage your time well. Focus on your 20% to drive 80% of the result and set targets for yourself. 2. Identify and improve areas that the team is currently struggling in. Estabilish a plan and chalk it out through to actionables. 3. Even when one is a leader- Always, lead by example. You cannot expect your team to do what you do not. 4. Work on your skill development, self improvement. Never stop. 5. Remove wasters from a process and adopt a result oriented approach to demonstrate your effectiveness.

In my experience, one of the best ways to grow professionally and personally is to step outside your comfort zone. That feeling of uneasiness and uncertainty is the space within which we learn and grow. It’s in that space that it’s particularly acceptable to make mistakes, some would even say it is expected since we’re stepping into uncharted territory, so long as we learn from those mistakes. Being willing to take on new responsibilities is a hallmark of a great leader as it creates opportunities for Team members to grow professionally and personally as well.

One thing I've found helpful is to always lead with a "Yes!" This was a key principle taught during a development program I attended years ago. Taking responsibility for projects and tasks that are new and different can be uncomfortable, but at the same time provide a tremendous opportunity. This has been invaluable in making me challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone, develop new skills, and build new relationships.

If you’re like me, I hate (and love) being recognized. I feel a sense of guilt within my accomplishment. To combat this, I defer all accomplishments and achievements to the people that help me get there. I celebrate a win by a prayer to God, by a family trip, or an office lunch.

Celebrating achievements is a key aspect of effective leadership, and I consistently prioritize recognizing and acknowledging the accomplishments of my team members. By creating a culture of appreciation and gratitude, I demonstrate that every contribution, no matter how small, is valued and worthy of recognition. Whether it's a project milestone, exceeding targets, or individual accomplishments, I make it a point to publicly celebrate and commend the efforts of my team. Through genuine praise and acknowledgment, I not only boost morale and motivation but also foster a sense of camaraderie and pride within the team.

Leadership is more about helping others become leaders, rather than simply collecting more followers. I believe that to lead, one must first be able to learn, honestly and objectively; then to teach, fully and wholeheartedly. Therefore, if a supervisor were to keep this in mind, they will become an invaluable asset to their organization. I do not think there is a better way to demonstrate one’s leadership capabilities, than to make leaders out of your followers.

Volunteer to resolve crisis whenever they show up and wherever they do in the organization. Chances are that leadership is taking note. N/B: This works best if your originally assigned duties are delivered to minimum expectations.
