So as per my experience there is no specific software or any favourite software, we have solidworks a great software for beginners with easy to use interface, but as the files become heavy , you require heavy systems to process and it won't work with STL editing, On the other hand if you are working for a client or service bureau and you only receive STEP files , i would recommend going with Rhino software ,not good for CAD designing but best for STEP file Manipulation and creating DFAM designs If both don't suit your use you can go with Autodesk Fusion360 , which can handle modification CAD Designing, modification and STL Manipulation featuring STL to CAD conversion.
